Emmitsburg, Md. (April 3,
2010)-Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) went
3-for-4 with a career high six RBI to lead Mount St. Mary's to a
14-4 win over Wagner in the final game of a four-game series at
E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The Mount won three of the
four games to move into sole possession of first place in the
Northeast Conference.
The Mount (10-13, 6-2 NEC) broke open a
tie game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and six more
in the fifth to take control. Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South
Lakes) opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to snap
a 4-4 tie. Jacob Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and
Shane Eyler (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) followed with walks
to put runners on first and second with two outs for Caron, who
came through with a two-run double to left-center field to give the
Mount a 7-4 lead.
The Mount sealed the win with a six-run
fifth inning. Michael Foster (Easton, Md./Easton) opened the frame
with a solo home run, his first career home run at the Mount. With
two outs, Darr singled to start a rally. Kyle Kane (Boonsboro,
Md./Boonsboro) walked and Eyler singled up the middle to plate Darr
for a 9-4 Mount lead. Caron then belted a three-run homer to right
field to give the Mount a commanding 12-4 lead. Josh Winter
(Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) then lofted a home run to right in the
next at bat to push the Mount's lead to 13-4.
Wagner took the early lead in the game
when Jared Gruccio tripled with the bases loaded in the top of the
first inning. The Mount responded with a pair of runs in the
bottom of the inning to get right back into the game. Caron walked
with the bases loaded to force home the first run and a wild pitch
allowed Kane to score to make the score 3-2.
Wagner's Seth Boyd had an RBI single in
the top of the second, but the Mount answered with a pair of runs
in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4. With two outs,
Flynn walked and then stole second. Zach Helman followed with a
walk and Darr scored both with a two-run double.
Caron finished the game 3-for-4 at the
plate with a home run and six RBI to pace the Mount offense. Darr
had an outstanding day at the plate as well, reaching base all six
times with a 4-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of walks. He
added three runs scored and two RBI in the game. Eyler was 2-for-3
with two walks and two runs scored while Foster and Flynn each went
1-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run.
On the mound, Kent Worthington
(Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) followed his no-hitter last
weekend with a solid start. The senior right-hander allowed four
runs (one earned) in 7.1 innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
