EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sacred Heart swept a Northeast Conference
(NEC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Pioneers took the
opener 11-6 and then won 5-4 in eight innings.
Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced the
Mount (21-18, 4-6 NEC) with five hits and five RBIs. Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added three hits and two runs
scored and Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) posted three
hits, three runs scored and an RBI in the two games.
Jen Russell got the win in both games for the Pioneers (17-18,
6-4 NEC), and Courtney Lee posted five hits, five runs scored and
five RBIs in the two games.
Mount St. Mary's held the lead in both games, but Sacred Heart
came back in both ends of the doubleheader to come away with the
sweep.
In the opener, the Mount jumped out to a 6-1 lead before the
Pioneers scored the final 10 runs to come away with the
victory.
After Sacred Heart posted a run in the first inning, the Mount
scored three runs in the first and three runs in the second to take
a five-run lead.
Adrian FitzSimon gave the Pioneers a 1-0 edge on an RBI single
down the right field line.
Mount St. Mary's answered with three runs in the bottom of the
stanza. Zingle walked to start the rally before Lisa Curreri
(Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) singled and Liz Christiansen
(Etters, Pa./Red Land) walked to load the bases. Everist then
plated Zingle and Curreri on a single down the right field line for
a 2-1 edge. Reeder doubled to bring home Everist to cap the
three-run inning.
The Mount repeated its three-run outburst in the second. Zingle
was the catalyst for the rally again with a double with one out.
Christiansen reached on a fielder's choice and Everist walked to
load the bases when Amanda Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll)
coaxed a bases loaded walk to force home Zingle. Reeder increased
the advantage to 6-1 on a two-run single.
Sacred Heart came back with a run in the third and the fourth on
solo home runs by FitzSimon and Lee, respectively to trim the
margin to 6-4.
The Pioneers then took the lead for good on four runs in the
fifth. Lee hit a two-run homer, Marissa Montemagni hit a
run-scoring double and Taylor Froelich doubled home the fourth run
of the stanza for a 7-6 lead. Sacred Heart sealed the win with four
runs in the seventh for an 11-6 victory.
In the second game, Mount St. Mary's took the lead with two runs
in the first inning. After Curreri singled and came around to score
on Everist's double to left, Reeder plated Everist with a single to
center for a 2-0 edge.
Lee homered to lead off the second to trim the margin to 2-1.
The Pioneers then took the lead in the sixth with two runs on a
Montemagni sacrifice fly and Carley Rudloff touched home on a
steal.
The Mountaineers answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the
game at 3. Everist started the inning with a walk, Reeder reached
on an infield single and Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's
Ryken) walked to the load the bases before Katie Donovan (Seabrook,
Md./St. Vincent Palotti) coaxed a bases loaded walk to event the
game at 3.
Lee regained the margin for Sacred Heart on a bloop single to
right field that just missed the glove of Curreri by Lee.
Mount St. Mary's came right back in the bottom of the inning to
tie the game at 4. Christiansen walked and moved to second on a
wild pitch. Reeder then plated pinch runner Chloe Mizanty
(Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) with a single up the middle to tie the
game. The squad then had a chance to win it after Taylor Beebe
(Olympia, Wash./Capital) and Leddy walked to load the bases, but
the Pioneers got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Sacred Heart took the lead for good in the ninth on a Jasmin
Vicente double down the left field line for a 5-4 edge.
The Mount once again had a chance to tie the game in the bottom
of the frame. Everist and Reeder walked and Beebe singled to center
field to load the bases with one out, but a shallow fly out to left
and a ground out to the pitcher ended the game.
Curreri and Zingle both moved into seventh place for runs scored
in a single season with 30. Curreri also moved into second place in
career games played (176), fifth in career walks (48) and sixth in
stolen bases (19) while Reeder jumped into seventh place for career
RBIs (60). Everist moved into ninth place for RBIs in a single
season at the Mount with 26.

pitched (135.) and 10th in career games pitched (47). Amanda Hanson
