Emmitsburg, Md. (April 11, 2010)-

The Mount St. Mary's softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Long Island on Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus. The Blackbirds won the opener 13-1 before posting a 6-2 win in the second game.

In the opening game, the Mount (21-16, 4-4 NEC) answered a Long Island run in the top of the first with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Courtney Zingle doubled to open the bottom of the first, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Liz Christensen sacrifice fly.

The Blackbirds (20-14, 8-2 NEC) broke the game open with a four-run second inning. Bianca Mejia had a two-run double to left-center field to give Long Island a 3-1 lead. Mariesha Marker added an RBI single while the fourth run scored on an error.

Mejia hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth and Long Island sealed the win with a seven-run fifth. Mejia had a two-run blast in that inning while Brynn Lewis also added a long ball.

Zingle had the Mount's lone hit in game one while Amanda Hanson allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 4.1 innings to take the loss.

In the second game, the Mount again answered a Long Island run in the top of the first with one in the bottom of the frame. After Mejia led off the game with a home run, the Mount answered in the bottom of the inning.

Zingle singled up the middle and moved to second on a Lisa Curreri sacrifice bunt. Christiansen walked and an LIU error loaded the bases for Nicole Reeder, who grounded out to second with Zingle scoring on the play.

Long Island scored three times in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Emily Kakuska had an RBI single ahead of a Mejia two-run homer. It was Mejia's fourth-consecutive at bat with a home run in the twinbill.

LIU added a run in the top of the third before the Mount posted a run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fourth, Amanda Buckel doubled, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Chloe's Mizianty's pinch-hit single to left. Lewis homered in the seventh for the Blackbirds to round out the scoring.

Amanda Sadowl allowed six runs (five earned) in a complete-game loss in game two for the Mount. Sarah Reynolds struck out three and allowed one earned run in a complete-game win for LIU.

Mejia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two home runs and three RBI to pace LIU to the win. Lewis was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs in the game as well.
