New York, N.Y. (March 27, 2010)-The Mount St.
Mary's men's lacrosse team stretched its win streak to three with a
12-5 win at Wagner on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Andrew Scalley
posted three goals and two assists to lead the Mount to the
victory.
Scalley's career-high five points paced the offense while Jake
Willertz added three goals for the Mountaineers. The Mount's
leading scorer, Cody Lehrer, who entered the game averaging 4.25
goals per game, posted two goals and an assist in the win while
Brett Schmidt and Mike Adkins added two goals each in the
victory.
Ben Trapp won 12-of-16 face-offs in the game and had four ground
balls for the Mountaineers. Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 10
saves while allowing five goals in 56:30 of action. A.J. Schaufler
made a pair of save in the final 3:30 of the game.
Cody Isander led Wagner with a goal and an assist while Michael
Gutkin made nine saves while allowing 11 goals in 57:22 of
action.
The Mount held a 39-to-27 advantage in shots and a 39-to-30
margin in ground balls. The Mount's man-down defense allowed just
one goal in nine Wagner chances.
After falling behind 2-0 midway through the first quarter, the
Mount scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 advantage.
Isandaner and Mike Scheerer scored early goals to give the Seahawks
(0-7, 0-1 MAAC) the early lead.
The Mount countered with a pair of Willertz goals sandwiched
around a score by Brett Schmidt. Bryant Schmidt assisted on each
of the Willertz tallies as the Mount went to the second quarter
leading 3-2.
The Seahawks struck just 11 seconds into the second quarter with
a Will Macumber goal to even the score at 3-3. Brett Schmidt
answered that score with his second goal of the game to give the
Mount the lead while Willertz completed a hat trick with an
extra-man goal with 9:41 left in the first half.
After Wagner cut the Mount lead to 5-4, the Mountaineers rattled
off the final three goals of the half for an 8-4 lead. Scalley was
a key to the run, scoring twice while assisting on a Mike Adkins
goal.
Mount St. Mary's took control of the game by scoring the only
two goals in the third quarter. Scalley scored five minutes into
the quarter before Lehrer struck for his first goal of the
game.
Wagner's Mike Hurley scored an extra-man goal to open the fourth
quarter scoring to cut the Mount lead to 10-5. The Mountaineers,
however, sealed the win with goals from Lehrer and Adkins to close
out the scoring.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, March 31, with a 3:00
p.m. home game against Sacred Heart at Waldron Family Stadium on
campus.
