EMMITSBURG, Md. - Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land)
knocked in three runs to lead Mount St. Mary's past Rhode Island
5-0 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.
Christiansen went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and an RBI
single to propel the Mount (13-10) to its third-straight
home-opening win. The sophomore, who has three home runs and a
team-leading 21 RBIs in 2010, has hit seven homers in her two years
in Emmitsburg.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) lost her no-hit bid
with one out in the seventh inning, finishing with a two-hit
complete-game shutout and two strikeouts for her sixth win of the
year while Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) had a hit,
two runs scored and an RBI in the winning effort.
Melissa Wilson broke up Sadowl's no-hitter with a single to
center field while Erika Szymanski also recorded a hit in the final
stanza for the Rams (5-15) in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early advantage and extended
its lead while Sadowl held Rhode Island's offense at bay to earn
the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Mount scored two runs in the first after Curreri reached on
an error and then came around to score on Christiansen two-run shot
to right for a 2-0 lead.
The squad added a run in the third to increase the advantage to
three runs. Amanda Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) was hit by
the pitch to start the inning before Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) and Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's
Ryken) both singled to center to load the bases. Chloe Mizanty
(Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) then plated Buckel with a sacrifice fly
to left center.
Mizanty then helped to setup Mount St. Mary's final two runs of
the afternoon. The sophomore singled through the left side and came
around to touch home on Curreri's RBI double to right center.
Christiansen then sealed the win with a single up the middle to
score Curreri and hand the Mountaineers a 5-0 margin.
The Rams got a runner on first in the first inning when Jackie
Kampmeier walked to open the contest, but was erased a fielder's
choice and a double play ended the inning. Sadowl then retired the
next 16 batters before a walk with two outs in the sixth. A
groundout got the Mount out of the inning. Wilson singled to center
to end the no-hitter with one out in the seventh and Szymanski
singled down the right field line with two outs to give Rhode
Island its biggest threat of the day, but a force out at third
ended the game.
Curreri moved into second place on the program's all-time career
doubles list (30) and fourth in career total bases (191).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday at home against
Coppin State. Game time is 3 p.m.
