Softball Erupts For 19 Runs In Pair Of Wins At Mason Mid-Week Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. - Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land), Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) went a combined 6-for-9 with nine RBIs to lead Mount St. Mary's past George Mason 11-2 in the Mason Mid-Week Softball Invitational on Wednesday. The Mount swept all four games in the Mason Mid-Week Invitational after defeating Hampton 8-0 in the second game of the day.

Christiansen went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer to help stake the Mount (10-5) out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning. The sophomore had two runs scored in the contest. Leddy, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, knocked in two runs on a single in the second inning and then added an RBI single and a run scored in the fourth. Zimmerman also went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in after plating a run in the second on a single and adding two-run single in the fourth.

Along with Christiansen, Leddy and Zimmerman, Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) added two hits and two runs scored, Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) registered a hit and two runs scored, Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) posted a hit, an RBI and two runs scored and Amanda Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) added two runs scored and an RBI in the opening win against the Patriots.

Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs against the Pirates (5-11). Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) notched her second shutout of the season after tossing a six-inning three-hit shutout with two strikeouts. Zingle added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI and Buckel had two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Zimmerman posted two hits and a run scored against Hampton.

After George Mason took a 1-0 edge in the first inning of the opener, Mount St. Mary's posted four runs in the first and second inning to take the lead and never look back for its third-straight victory.

The Patriots took the lead on a Rachael Davies RBI single through the left side. The Mount then recorded four runs in the bottom of the inning to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 advantage. Zingle and Curreri started the rally with singles before Christiansen smacked her first home run of the season to right center. Reeder was then hit by the pitch and came around to score on Zimmerman's single to center to hand Mount St. Mary's the three-run lead.

Zingle started the second-inning four-run rally by reaching on an error. After Curreri single to right, Reeder plated Zingle on a double down the left field line. Buckel brought home Curreri on a fielder's choice before Leddy scored Reeder and Buckel on a single to right field to increase the lead to 8-1.

The Patriots answered with a run in the third on a Katie Rynex sacrifice fly to trim the margin to 8-2, but the Mountaineers scored three runs in the fourth to help end the game in five innings. Christiansen single to first base and Buckel reached on a fielder's choice before Leddy singled through the left side to score Christiansen. Zimmerman capped the offensive outburst in the opening game with a two-run single to center for an 11-2 victory.

Amanda Hanson (La Plata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings to earn her third win of the season. The top five batters in the Mount's batting order each scored two runs while seven of the nine batters recorded a hit in the contest.

In the nightcap, Mount St. Mary's registered three runs in the first inning and five runs in the sixth inning for an 8-0 victory against Hampton.

Zingle started the three-run rally with a single to right center before Christiansen reached after being hit by the pitch. Reeder brought Zingle home on a groundout to shortstop before Everist plated Christiansen and Buckel on a double to left center for a 3-0 advantage.

The Mount then put the game away in the sixth with five runs. After Leddy opened the stanza with a walk, Zimmerman single to left and Zingle plated Leddy with an RBI single up the middle. Zimmerman and Zingle touched home on an error before Christiansen and Reeder walked. Buckel and Everist capped the five-run inning with RBI singles up the middle to give the Mountaineers a 8-0 advantage.

With her homer in the first inning against George Mason, Christiansen moved into a tie with Curreri, Zingle and Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) for ninth place on the program's all-time career home run list with five round trippers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to Fairfax to compete in the Mason Cherry Blossom Classic on Friday. The Mount will start the three-day event against Niagara at 1:30 p.m.
