Wagner Downs Women's Basketball, 64-57

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wagner defeated Mount St. Mary's 64-57 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) paced the Mount (8-14, 4-8 NEC) with 16 points in the loss.

Megan Mahoney fueled the Seahawks (9-14, 6-6 NEC) with 20 points. Andrea Reed added two points and Stephanie McBride chipped in 11 points in the winning effort.

Wagner started the second half on a 14-0 run and held on a late Mount St. Mary's charge to complete the two-game sweep in the NEC's inaugural Rivalry Week.

Despite falling behind by 14 points to start the second half, the Mountaineers rallied to nearly tie the game with 5:25 left. After the Seahawks scored three-straight points to take a 58-51 lead, Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and Cassie Cooke (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) nailed consecutive 3-pointers to make it a one-point game at 58-57 with 5:25 left, but Reed scored on a fast-break layup and the Mount could get no closer the rest of the way.

Wagner came out of the break to score the first 14 points of the stanza. McBride started the surge with back-to-back baskets to give the Seahawks the lead for good. Reed then converted her own steal into a layup at 17:23 before Ashley Olsen drained two free throws a minute later and Reed hit the backend of two charity tosses at 15:57. Mahoney nailed a 3-pointer at 14:59 to make it a double-digit contest before Reed capped the spurt with a jumper at 14:40 for a 43-29 margin.

Mount St. Mary's then played catch up the rest of the game. Trailing 48-34, the Mount went on a 6-0 run to trim the margin to 48-40 with 9:37 on the clock. Dunn started the run with a layup before Lauren Howell drained a 3-pointer at 10:17 and Dunn hit the second of two free throws at 9:37 to cut the margin to eight points.

McBride hit a 3-pointer to stop the run and Nyoto Patterson nailed a jumper at 7:48 to restore a double-digit advantage at 53-40.

The Mountaineers then scored 17 of the 22 points to cut the deficit to one point. Dunn started a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer at 7:25. After Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) scored in the lane at 6:40, Dunn recorded consecutive baskets to trim the margin to 53-49. Ashley Olsen and Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) traded points before Mahoney hit two free throws and Patterson hit 1 of 2 to give the Seahawks a 58-51 advantage. Thanks to 3-balls from Henderson and Cooke, the Mount cut the deficit to 58-57, but Reed scored a layup to seal the victory.

In the first half, Mount St. Mary's went on a 10-0 run to break an 11-all tie and grab a 21-11 advantage. Oliver and Westbrooks started the spurt by converted two free throws each before Dunn converted a traditional 3-point play at 7:51. Cooke then capped the 10 unanswered points with a 3-pointer at 7:23 to hand the Mountaineers a 21-11 lead.

Sparked by 10 points by Mahoney, Wagner battled back to take a 27-24 lead with 1:50 left in the stanza thanks to a 16-3 run.

Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Kaniesha Hicks then traded points before Henderson nailed a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to knot the score at 29 going into the locker room.

Mount St. Mary's returns to the hardwood on Thursday at Monmouth. Game time is 5 p.m.
