EMMITSBURG, Md. - Robert Morris dashed Mount St. Mary's
Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament hopes with a 62-42 victory in
women's basketball action on Saturday. With the loss, the Mount was
eliminated from playoff contention.
Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) paced Mount
St. Mary's (10-18, 6-12 NEC) with 10 points.
Mary Durojaye and Vega Gimeno-Martinez fueled the Colonials
(22-7, 17-1 NEC) with 11 points apiece. Angela Pace added seven
points and nine assists in the winning effort.
Robert Morris took the lead midway through the first half and
never looked back to end the Mount's chances of advancing to the
NEC Tournament.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an 8-2 lead and a 14-9 advantage
in the first eight minutes of the game. Sydney Henderson
(Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) started the scoring with a 3-pointer at
17:48 before Andresson scored in the lane to give the Mountaineers
a 5-0 edge at 16:16.
Durojaye answered for the Colonials with a layup at 16:02. After
Andresson nailed a 3-ball at 15:36 for an 8-2 lead, Gimeno-Martinez
answered with a 3-pointer of her own at 15:25 and Monica Jones made
it a one-point game with a jumper at 14:10. Pace handed Robert
Morris a 9-8 edge on a basket in the paint at 13:51.
Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) then drilled
consecutive 3-pointers to give the Mount a 14-9 lead at 12:37.
The Colonials then rallied with 17 unanswered points to take the
lead for good. Durojaye started the by making the frontend of two
free throws at 11:53 before Gimeno-Martinez nailed a trey at 11:04.
Pace converted her own steal into a layup at 10:50 to give Robert
Morris the lead for good.
Gimeno-Martinez nailed her second 3-pointer at 9:57 before
Durojaye scored in the lane at 9:17 for a 20-14 edge. Durojaye,
Anna Galite and Yohanna Morton each scored in the lane to increase
the margin to 26-14 with 5:58 left in the half.
Andresson momentarily halted the run with a 3-pointer at 5:30 to
trim the margin to 26-17, but the Colonials ended the stanza on a
12-4 run to go into the locker room with a 38-21 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's cut the deficit to 11 points after a Cassie
Cooke (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) layup at 14:15 in the final
frame and again on a Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic)
jumper at 11:12, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Senior Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) ends her career
ranked third in games played (115) and eighth in games started
(93). The senior posted 763 points, 285 rebounds, 278 assists and
110 steals in her career. Oliver had two points, five rebounds and
four assists in her final collegiate contest.
Mount St. Mary's advanced to the NEC Tournament in every year
since joining the NEC and has its unprecedented 20-straight
postseason appearances snapped in 2010.
