WILMINGTON, N.C. - Mount St. Mary's opened the 2010 season with
a pair of victories at the Seahawks Invitational in non-conference
softball action on Friday. The Mount defeated St. Bonaventure 6-5
in the opener and host UNC-Wilmington 5-0 in the nightcap. The
Mountaineers won the opener for the first time since 2007 and
opened a campaign 2-0 for the first time since the 2000 season.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed five runs
(two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in the opener.
Offensively, Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding)
paced the Mount with a hit, two RBIs and two runs scored. Liz
Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) added two hits, two runs scored
and an RBI and Amanda Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) added
two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
In the nightcap, freshman Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St.
Joseph) made her collegiate debut with a five-hit shutout and six
strikeouts. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) had a hit, two
RBIs and two runs scored. Buckel had two hits and an RBI and
Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added two hits and a
run scored.
In the win against the Bonnies (0-2), the Mount rallied from a
4-3 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third and held on
for a 6-5 victory.
Christiansen started the decisive rally with a single and came
around to score on Reeder's home run to left field to hand the
Mount a 5-4 lead. Buckel then reached on an infield single and
touched home on Jenna Zimmerman's (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville)
single for a 6-4 advantage.
St. Bonaventure came back with one run in the seventh. Shelly
Seeger and Stephanie Narde each singled before Brooke Frey walked
to load the bases. Jessenia Andujar single to plate Seeger to trim
the margin to one run, but a fielder's choice out at the plate and
a double play ended the threat to hand Mount St. Mary's the
victory.
The Mount jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning.
Zingle started the rally with a walk and came around to score on
Christiansen's double. Christiansen then scored on a wild pitch.
Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) walked and touched home on
Buckel's RBI single to right field.
The Bonnies answered with two runs in the second to trim the
margin to 3-2 when a runner touched home on a passed ball and an
error. St. Bonaventure then took the lead with two runs in the
third thanks to an Ashley Nowak RBI while the second run scored on
an error. The Mountaineers then rallied to take the lead and earn
the win.
In the nightcap, the Mount defeated the Sehawks (1-4) thanks to
Pagano's shutout and three runs in the third and two in the
fourth.
The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the third before Everist
walked to force home Beebe before Buckel singled to left field to
plate Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon). Zimmerman
walked to bring home Reeder to cap the three-run stanza.
The squad added two runs in the fourth after Zingle singled and
came around to score on Beebe's two-run homer to increase the Mount
St. Mary's lead to 5-0.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday against Gardner-Webb.
Game time is 10 a.m. The squad will also play in a seeding round
game later in the day.
