Women's Basketball Battles Navy In Annapolis On Wednesday

opening tip...

Wednesday's game between Mount St. Mary's and Navy marks the 25th meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1976-77 season.
• The Mount leads the series 17-7, but the Midshipmen took the last matchup 57-46 on Nov. 25, 2006.
• Navy has won two of the last three in the series, but the Mountaineers have won 14 of the last 17 tilts against the Midshipmen.
• The series is tied at 5 in Annapolis, but Navy has won the last two games played at Alumni Hall.
• The two teams played at least once every year from the 1976-77 campaign to the 1988-89 season. They have only battled five times in the Mount's Division I era with the Mountaineers holding a 3-2 edge.• Mount St. Mary's is 34-18 all-time against the Patriot League.

about the midshipmen... Navy, who has lost its last three contests, comes into the contest 4-4 after falling 60-55 to Delaware at home on Sunday.
• Senior G Angela Myers nearly had a triple-double against the Blue Hens after finishing the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. The senior leads the team with 14.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game and also has recorded team-best 43 assists and 22 steals.
• Senior C Cassie Consedine added 18 points and six rebounds against Delaware. Consedine ranks second on the squad with 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
• Freshman F Jade Geif ranks third on the squad with 7.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The freshman tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 65-43 win against Maine on Nov. 26.

last time we met... Navy used a strong shooting second half to come from behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 57-46 on Nov. 25, 2006. Dita Krumberga paced the Mount with 16 points and 10 rebounds while LaToya Butler tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds. Carly Meyer came off the bench to score a season-high 30 points, including 16 in the final frame to fuel the Midshipmen in the contest. Kate Hobbs chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.

last time out... Pittsburgh defeated Mount St. Mary's 66-30 on Saturday. Junior Sandra Andresson paced the Mount with a season-high nine points and five rebounds.

quick hits on pittsburgh game... Mount St. Mary's grabbed a 3-2 advantage after junior Sandra Andresson nailed a 3-pointer at 18:18 before Pittsburgh rolled off the next 11 points and 22 of 24 to take a 26-5 lead. It was the fourth time this season the Mount has grabbed an early lead by making a 3-pointer to start the game. The squad also accomplished the feat against Virginia on Nov. 14, at Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Towson on Dec. 1.
• The 30 points scored by the Mount established a new program Division I low and the third fewest in program history. The Panthers held the Mount to 31 points in the 2007-08 match.
• Mount St. Mary's has been held under 40 points in a game twice this season, marking the first time that has happened since the 1974-75 season. The Mount did score over 37 points in that season. In 2007-08, the squad posted a 31-point game against Pittsburgh and a 40-point performance against UMBC.
• Andresson paced the Mount with nine points and five rebounds. The junior is averaging 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in her last two games after averaging 2.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in the first four games of the season.
• Sophomore Selina Mann moved into the program's Top-100 for points with 132 after scoring seven points against Pittsburgh. The sophomore also had four assists and four rebounds on Saturday.

next on tap... The Mount concludes its three-game road trip at Loyola on Saturday.
• The Mountaineers return to Knott Arena against Binghamton on Dec. 18 before heading out on the road for three games.

on the road... The Mount is 0-3 on the road this season and is averaging 45.0 points per game away from Emmitsburg.
• Freshmen Jessie Kaufman (7.7 ppg., 3.7 rpg.) and Ashley Christie (6.7 ppg., 3.7 rpg.) pace the Mount on the road.
• Christie and sophomore Sydney Henderson are the only players on the team to reach double figures in points on the road.
• At home, the Mount has posted five double-digit performances in three games. Senior Mary Dunn and freshman Kayla Grossett each have two 10-point games at Knott Arena and Christie has one.

its a shooting and rebounding thing... Mount St. Mary's is 0-5 this season when the opponents have a better shooting percentage than the Mount.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 26-10 when it has a better shooting performance, but just 7-51 when the opponents has a better shooting game.
• Rebounds have also been a concern with the opponent holding the edge in all six games and the Mountaineers are currently -13.2 per game in rebounds.
• Turnovers have not been as much of an issue as the opponent has had more turnovers than the Mountaineers in three of the six games.

board issues... Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in each of its first six games this season. The Mount's opponent has held a 10-rebound edge in the Mountaineers' five losses while UMES only held a six-carom margin in the squad's only win.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 59 games under head coach Bryan Whitten, including 29 games with double-digit rebound deficits. The squad is 3-26 when the opponent holds a 10-board advantage.
• Last season, the Mount won the rebound battle in 50 percent of its games and had seven games when the opponent had a 10-carom margin.

that was a career day... Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 14 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshman Kayla Grossett notched a career-high 13 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshmen Kelly Guerriero and Jessie Kaufman each recorded a career-high nine points against Cincinnati on Nov. 23.

in the month... Mount St. Mary's is 103-86 in the month of December in program history. The Mount is 50-24 at home, 41-45 on the road and 12-17 at a neutral site in the month.
• The Mountaineers are 49-76 in December since switching to Division I in 1988-89. The team is 22-20 at Knott Arena, 18-41 on the road and 9-15 at a neutral site.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 3-16 overall, 1-4 at home, 2-11 on the road and 0-1 at a neutral site in the month.
• Mount St. Mary's played its first-ever contest in program history in the month of December, falling to Loyola 60-31 on Dec. 4, 1974.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 72-112 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• After establishing a new career-high on her bucket with 12:01 left in the second half, the sophomore left the game with a knee injury.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

1,000-point scorer... Mount St. Mary's has had a player reach the 1,000-point plateau in five of the last seven campaigns.
• Senior Mary Dunn is the closest player to 1,000 points with 882 career points.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (532 points) is next on the Mount's active point list.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could arguable be the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marks the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 15 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 94-straight games in her career.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks started 67 games in her career and 55 of the last 60 games.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 53 of the 64 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight.
• Freshmen Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman have both started the first six games of their collegiate career.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 19-11 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 14-50 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 26-21 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 7-40 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 25-13 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-2 when the game is tied, but just 6-46 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 15-14 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 16-43 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 26-21 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn is the only player on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in her career. The senior accomplished the feat twice last season when she posted a career-high 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• The Mount has registered 16 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 9-7 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 28th place in program history with 882 career points. She can pass Paula Balkonis (907, 1987-91) with 26 points to move into 27th place.
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn can move into the program's all-time career rebounding Top-10 with 14 caroms.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 14 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with three next double-double.
• The senior is also seventh on the Mount's games started list with 94 career starts and can move into sixth place with one start and tie Vanessa Blair (95, 1988-92).

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 533 career points to rank 50th in program history and can move into 49th place with four points and into 48th place with 14 points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 61st place in program history with 361 points and can move into 60th place with 58 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move intp 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 132 points for her career to rank 99th in team history and can move into 98th place with six points, 97th place with eight points, 96th place with 12 points, 95th place with 13 points, 94th with 15 points and 93rd place with 16 points.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 204-98 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 135-55 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

freshmen for one-two-three... Freshmen Jessie Kaufman, Ashley Christie, Rachel Mathews and Kayla Grossett each knocked down their first career shot attempt in the game against Virginia.
• Kaufman gave the Mount a 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer 35 seconds into the game and Christie nailed 3-ball of her own to reclaim the lead for the Mountaineers at 6-4 with 18:28 left in the first half.
• Mathews recorded a 3-point play the traditional way after scoring a layup at 15:55 and then converting the free throw to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-7 advantage.
• Grossett nailed a 3-pointer on her first collegiate attempt at 5:25 in the second half.

in their debut... The five freshmen each saw action against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman both made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Christie posted 13 points, including 10 in the second half, along with two rebounds and two assists. Kaufman had eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.
• Kayla Grossett, Rachel Mathews and Kelly Guerriero each saw time off the bench. Grossett had six points and two rebounds while Mathews had three points, three rebounds and an assist. Guerriero played the final 1:55 and missed her own shot attempt. Guerriero notched her first collegiate point in the second half against American on Nov. 17.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 241 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (253) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (247).
• The Mount is 241-131 in Northeast Conference play, including 135-54 at Knott Arena and 106-77 on the road.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 33-60 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 15-29 overall at Knott Arena and 10-18 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with an 18-31 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 10-16 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).

new to the mountain... Fourth-year head coach Bryan Whitten added freshman Ashley Christie, Kayla Grossett, Kelly Guerriero, Jessie Kaufman and Rachel Mathews to the roster in 2010-11. Each player signed a National Letter of Intent last season.

coaching changes... For the third-straight season, head coach Bryan Whitten has made changes to his coaching staff. Denise King and Lisa Steele both moved up a chair while Whitten added Mount alumni Brianna Gauthier this season.
• King is in her second season at the Mount after serving as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Rhode Island, for the last four years.
• Steele is also in her second season at the Mount after ending her four-year career at George Washington in 2008-09 after registering 206 points and 107 rebounds with the Colonials.
• Gauthier returns to the Mount after serving as an assistant coach under former Mount assistant Mark Zacher at Norwich, a Division III school in Vermont. A 2009 graduate of the Mount, she finished her career 18th in program history in all-time career points (1,128), second in 3-pointers made (164), second in 3-pointers attempted (490) and ninth in assists (335). Gauthier briefly played professionally in Sweden before joining the Norwich coaching staff last season.
