Pittsburgh Downs Women's Basketball, 66-30

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Pittsburgh defeated Mount St. Mary's 66-30 in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) led the Mount (1-5) with nine points and five rebounds. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) added seven points, four rebounds and three assists while Jessie Kauffman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) also had six points in the loss.

Taneisha Harrison paced the Panthers (4-3) with 13 points. Asia Logan recorded 12 points, Leeza Burgess added 10 points and Shayla Scott tallied seven points and 12 rebounds in the winning effort.

Pittsburgh used a strong start to the game to jump out to the advantage and never look back to help head coach Agnus (McGlade) Berenato improve to 5-2 against her alma mater. Berenato is a 1980 graduate of Mount St. Mary's and improves to 4-0 against the Mountaineers as the Pittsburgh head coach.

After Andresson gave the Mount a 3-2 edge on a 3-pointer at 18:47, the Panthers rolled off the next 11 points and 22 of 24 to grab a 24-5 advantage with 11:29 left in the first half.

Marquel Davis started the 11-0 run with layup before Harrison and also scored in the paint to give Pittsburgh an 8-3 lead with 15:42 on the clock. After Ashlee Anderson hit the backend of two free throws at 14:34, Davis and Scott followed with back-to-back jumpers for a 13-3 margin at 13:19.

Andresson momentarily halted the surge with a jumper at 13:05 to trim the deficit to 13-5, but Pittsburgh responded with another 11-0 surge to take a 24-5 lead midway through the first half. Harrison sparked the run with seven points.

Mount St. Mary's then scored eight of the next 11 points thanks to treys by Andresson and Mann along with a jumper by Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) to trim the margin to 27-13 with 6:47 left in the stanza. The Panthers closed the half on a 9-5 run to go into the locker room with a 36-18 lead.

Pittsburgh opened the second half by holding the Mount without a field goal for 13 minutes and 38 seconds and went on a 24-1 in that stretch before Mann nailed a 3-pointer at the 6:22 mark. The Panthers went on for a 66-30 victory.

Pittsburgh played without their top two leading scorers in the game. Brittaney Thomas (15.2 ppg.) and Jania Sims (12.7 pgg.) were both suspended for the game for violating team rules.

The 30 points scored by Mount St. Mary's was a Division I program low and the third lowest in program history. The Mountaineers posted 31 points in the 2007-08 meeting against the Panthers.

The Mount returns to action on Wednesday at Navy. Game time is 7 p.m.
