Women's Basketball Heads To San Francisco For A New Year's Eve Matinee

opening tip... Friday's game between Mount St. Mary's and San Francisco marks the first meeting in program history for the two teams.
• It will also be the Mount's first game against a team from the West Coast Conference.
• The Dons have only faced Long Island from the Northeast Conference with the Blackbirds taking a 61-46 decision in the 2005-06 campaign.
• Mount St. Mary's is making it first trip to the state of California, but this is not the squad's first trip out west. The Mount participated in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout during the 2003-04 campaign.

about the dons... San Francisco comes into the contest 3-10 after defeating the Academy of Art 85-57 on Wednesday.
• Senior G Kelly Jo Mullaney paced the Dons with 16 points against the Academy of Art. Mullaney fueled San Francisco with a season-high 22 points in a 77-71 loss against Utah State on Dec. 8. Mullaney, who has led the team in scoring six times this season including the last three games, leads the team with 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore F Bailey Barbour added 11 points on Wednesday. The sophomore is averaging 3.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
• Junior G Vania Singleterry tallied 10 points and seven rebounds against the Academy of Art. The junior is averaging 4.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.
• Junior F Katy Keating paced the squad with 19 points in an 87-76 win against Rhode Island on Nov. 27. Keating and senior F Donnisha Taylor paced the Dons with 20 points in a 71-59 victory against San Jose State on Nov. 15. Keating ranks second on the team with 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while Taylor is third on the squad with 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

new year's eve games... Mount St. Mary's is 1-2 on New Year's Eve in program history.
• The last time the Mount played on Dec. 31 was in 2003-04 when the squad lost to Lehigh 86-83 in double overtime.
• The Mountaineers defeated American 63-56 in 1995 and lost to Holy Cross 82-75 in 1994.

last time out... Sophomore Selina Mann scored a career-high 26 points to lift Mount St. Mary's past San Jose State on Wednesday. Fellow sophomore Tara Lonergan added a career-best 13 points.

quick hits on san jose state game... Sophomore Selina Mann scored seven unanswered points from 15:44 mark in the second half to the 13:20 mark to erase a one-point deficit and hand the Mount the lead for good.
• Mount St. Mary's rallied from a seven-point deficit in the first half with a 9-0 run to take the lead at halftime.
• Mann scored a career-high 26 points, including hitting 10 of 13 from the free throw line and also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
• Sophomore Tara Lonergan added a career-high 13 points off the bench in a personal-best 30 minutes.
• Freshman Ashley Christie chipped in nine points, four assists and three steals. The freshman is averaging 10.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in her last two games.
• Junior Sandra Andresson added eight points in the win. Andresson is averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in her last three games.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman grabbed a career-high six rebounds and also recorded seven points.
• Mount St. Mary's scored a season-high 72 points and shot a season-best 46.9 percent (23-for-49).
• The Mount ended a program-record seven-game losing streak with the win. It was the fifth time in program history the Mountaineers lost seven in a row and the first since the 2007-08 season.
• Mount St. Mary's improved to 3-1 under head coach Bryan Whitten in the first game after Christmas.

three-pointer to start scoring is deadly for the mount... Mount St. Mary's registered a 3-pointer for its first field goal of the game six times this season. The Mount is 0-6 in those games.
• The squad has hit a trey to start its scoring against Virginia (Nov. 14), Cincinnati (Nov. 23), Towson (Dec. 1), Pittsburgh (Dec. 4), Navy (Dec. 8) and Loyola (Dec. 11).
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman has hit the squad's opening 3-pointer in four of the six games.
• The Mountaineers are 2-3 when its first field goal comes from inside the arc.

it all starts with defense... The opponent has scored 60 points in nine of the 11 games in 2010-11 and is averaging 66.5 points per game.
• Last season, the Mount allowed 60 points or more 11 times. The Mountaineers also ranked second in scoring defense (58.7 ppg.) in the Northeast Conference and 37th in Division I.
• The Mount has allowed 60 points in a game 51 times under head coach Bryan Whitten.

next on tap... The Mount concludes its four-game road trip at Quinnipiac on Tuesday.
• The Mount returns to Knott Arena against Robert Morris, the defending NEC regular season champion, on Jan. 8.

on the road... The Mount won its first road win with a 72-69 decision on Dec. 29 to improve to 1-6 on the road this season and is averaging 51.7 points per game away from Knott Arena.
• Sophomore Selina Mann is averaging 9.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game on the road this season. The sophomore has scored double figures in three of her last four road games. Mann posted 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against Navy on Dec. 8, 10 points against Loyola on Dec. 11 and a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 8.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game on the road. The freshman posted 13 points at Virginia on Nov. 14, 10 points at Navy and 11 points at Sacred Heart on Dec. 20.

in the last five... The Mount is 1-4 in its last five games and is averaging 53.2 points per game.
• Sophomore Selina Mann is averaging 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in the last five games. Mann has recorded three double-figure performances in that stretch. The sophomore posted 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against Navy on Dec. 8, 10 points against Loyola on Dec. 11 and a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29.
• Freshman Ashley Christie is averaging 9.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in her last five contests. Christie scored 10 points against the Midshipmen and 11 points at Sacred Heart on Dec. 20.• Senior Mary Dunn is averaging 8.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in the last five games. The senior posted 18 points against the Greyhounds and 12 points against the Pioneers.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 73-115 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

1,000-point countdown beginning... Senior Mary Dunn needs 76 points to become the program's 25th 1,000-point scorer.
• The senior would become the first Mount player since current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier accomplished the milestone in 2008-09. • Dunn has also moved into the programs Top-10 in rebounds (714) and games started (99).

its a shooting and rebounding thing... Mount St. Mary's is 0-9 this season when the opponents have a better shooting percentage than the Mount.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 27-10 when it has a better shooting performance, but just 7-55 when the opponents has a better shooting game.
• Rebounds have also been a concern with the opponent holding the edge in all 11 games and the Mountaineers are currently -10.9 per game in rebounds.

board issues... Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in each of its first 11 games this season. The opponents have held a 10-rebound edge in seven games this season, but the Mount has been trailed by 10 rebounds or less in four games, including three of the last four games.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 64 games under head coach Bryan Whitten, including 31 games with double-digit rebound deficits. The squad is 3-28 when the opponent holds a 10-board advantage.
• Last season, the Mount won the rebound battle in 50 percent of its games and had seven games when the opponent had a 10-carom margin.

that was a career day... Sophomore Selina Mann scored a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29. Fellow sophomore Tara Lonergan also established a career-best against the Spartans with 13 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 14 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshman Kayla Grossett notched a career-high 13 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshman Kelly Guerriero had a career-best 10 points at Navy on Dec. 8.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman each recorded a career-high nine points against Cincinnati on Nov. 23.

in the month... Mount St. Mary's is 104-90 in the month of December in program history. The Mount is 50-25 at home, 42-48 on the road and 12-17 at a neutral site in the month.
• The Mountaineers are 50-80 in December since switching to Division I in 1988-89. The team is 22-21 at Knott Arena, 19-44 on the road and 9-15 at a neutral site.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 5-20 overall, 1-5 at home, 4-13 on the road and 0-1 at a neutral site in the month.
• All five of the Mount's victories in December under Whitten have come after Dec. 13, including three after the Christmas holiday.
• Mount St. Mary's played its first-ever contest in program history in the month of December, falling to Loyola 60-31 on Dec. 4, 1974.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 16 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 99-straight games in her career.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks started 67 games in her career and 55 of the last 60 games.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 58 of the 71 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight.
• Freshman Ashley Christie has started the first 11 games of her collegiate career.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman started the first nine games of the season before fellow freshman Kayla Grossett has started the last two contests.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• After establishing a new career-high on her bucket with 12:01 left in the second half, the sophomore left the game with a knee injury.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could have arguably been the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 20-11 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 14-51 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 26-22 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 8-43 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 26-13 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-2 when the game is tied, but just 6-50 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 15-14 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 17-47 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 26-22 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn and sophomore Selina Mann are the only two players on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in their career.
• Dunn accomplished the feat twice last season when she posted a career-high 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• Mann became the first player this season to turn the trick when she posted a career-high 26 points against San Jose State on Dec. 29, 2010.
• The Mount has registered 17 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 10-7 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 27th place in program history with 924 career points. She can pass Rose Stephens (925, 1976-80) with one point for 26th place and can move ahead of Vera Feldbusch (939, 1996-00) with 15 points
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn moved into 10th place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 714 caroms after grabbing six boards against Loyola on Dec. 11. The senior can moved into ninth place and ahead of Bernadine Bocus (735, 1982-86) with 31 rebounds.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 14 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with three next double-double.
• The senior is also fourth on the Mount's games started list with 99 career starts and can move into third place with three starts to tie Nicole Schroyer (101, 1993-97).

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 533 career points to rank 50th in program history and can move into 49th place with four points and into 48th place with 14 points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 61st place in program history with 398 points and can move into 60th place with 21 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move into 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 173 points for her career to rank 85th in team history and can move into 84th place with two points, 83rd place with 11 points, 82nd place with 15 points and 81st place with 20 points.

freshmen for one-two-three... Freshmen Jessie Kaufman, Ashley Christie, Rachel Mathews and Kayla Grossett each knocked down their first career shot attempt in the game against Virginia.
• Kaufman gave the Mount a 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer 35 seconds into the game and Christie nailed 3-ball of her own to reclaim the lead for the Mountaineers at 6-4 with 18:28 left in the first half.
• Mathews recorded a 3-point play the traditional way after scoring a layup at 15:55 and then converting the free throw to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-7 advantage.
• Grossett nailed a 3-pointer on her first collegiate attempt at 5:25 in the second half.

in their debut... The five freshmen each saw action against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman both made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Christie posted 13 points, including 10 in the second half, along with two rebounds and two assists. Kaufman had eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.
• Kayla Grossett, Rachel Mathews and Kelly Guerriero each saw time off the bench. Grossett had six points and two rebounds while Mathews had three points, three rebounds and an assist. Guerriero played the final 1:55 and missed her own shot attempt. Guerriero notched her first collegiate point in the second half against American on Nov. 17.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 241 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (253) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (247).
• The Mount is 241-131 in Northeast Conference play, including 135-54 at Knott Arena and 106-77 on the road.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 204-98 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 135-55 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 34-65 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 15-30 overall at Knott Arena and 10-18 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with a 19-35 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 10-16 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).
