SAN JOSE, Calif. - Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield)
scored a career-high 26 points, including seven-straight points in
the second half to give Mount St. Mary's the lead for good and down
San Jose State 72-69 in non-conference women's basketball action
on Wednesday.
Mann went 7-for-11 from the field, 2 of 4 from behind the arc
and 10 of 13 from the free throw line for her first career 20-point
game and first for a Mount player this season after finishing with
26 points. The sophomore also added four rebounds, four assists and
two steals in the win.
Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) added a
career-high 13 points for the Mount (2-9) while Ashley Christie
(Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) added nine points and four
assists.
AJ Newton fueled the Spartans (0-12) with 22 points while Sara
Plavljanin posted 16 points and Myesha Broaden tallied 14 points
and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's rallied from a first-half deficit and held on
after several San Jose State comeback attempts for the victory in
the squad's first trip to California.
The Spartans scored seven-straight points to grab a 37-36 lead
at 16:24 in the final frame before Mann rolled off the next seven
points to reclaim the lead for the Mountaineers at 43-37 with 13:25
remaining.
Mount St. Mary's maintained the advantage, but San Jose State
went on a 7-0 run to trim the margin to 51-49 with 7:25 left thanks
to five points from Newton.
The Mount answered with an 11-2 run to take a 62-51 margin with
4:39 on the clock. Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes
School), who had eight points in the game, started the run on a
layup at 6:55 after Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) grabbed
the ball right before it went out of bounds and got it to
Andresson.
The Spartans cut the margin to 66-63 with 1:40 left after a
Plavljanin 3-pointer, but Lonergan hit a jumper at the 1:17 mark to
give Mount St. Mary's a 68-63 lead. Broaden then had a chance to
cut into the deficit at the free throw line and hit the backend of
two free throws with 46 seconds left. Mann then missed the 1 and 1
opportunity with 31 seconds left and San Jose State grabbed the
rebound. The Spartans then had the ball down four with 27.4 seconds
left before Christie stole the ball from San Jose State and made
two free throws at 14.5. Mann hit two free throws 10 seconds later
and Newton nailed a trey at the buzzer, but that was not enough for
San Jose State.
Despite the Spartans leading for most of the first half, the
Mountaineers used a 16-7 run in the final six minutes to grab a
32-30 advantage going into the locker room.
After Plavljanin extended the San Jose State lead to 23-16 on a
3-pointer at 6:25, Mount St. Mary's went on a 9-0 run to take its
first lead since early in the contest. Christie started the run
with a layup at 5:41 and then Lonergan scored five-straight points
to tie the game at 23 at 4:45 before Andresson capped the rally
with a basket in the paint at 4:05 to give the Mount a 25-23
edge.
The Spartans answered with five unanswered points by Newton to
retake the lead at 28-25 at the 2:20 mark before Kelly Guerriero
(Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) knotted the game at 28 on a
trey at 1:24. Leonie Solia momentarily gave San Jose State the lead
back with a jumper with 58 seconds left before Kaufman hit a jumper
20 seconds later to even the score at 30. Guerriero then converted
two free throws with 2.6 ticks on the clock to give the
Mountaineers the lead going into the break.
The Mount ended a program-record seven-game losing streak and
improved to 3-1 under head coach Bryan Whitten in the first game
after Christmas. The 72 points in the contest was a season-high for
the team and the squad shot a season-best 46.9 percent (23 of 49)
from the field on the night.
Kaufman finished the game with seven points and a career-high
six rebounds.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at San Francisco.
