Mount St. Mary's Downed by Northwestern, 70-47

Evanston, Ill. (December 23, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's lost at Northwestern, 70-47, on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Julian Norfleet scored a career-high 21 points to pace the Mountaineers in the game.

Norfleet was 8-for-12 from the field and added five assists in the loss. Raven Barber added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Mountaineers. Freshman Evan Cleveland had three points and eight rebounds while Danny Thompson added a team-high nine boards in the game.

Drew Crawford led Northwestern with 16 points and seven boards while John Shurna added 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Luka Mirkovic chipped in 15 points with Davide Curletti adding 11 points off the bench.

Northwestern (9-1) took control of the game from the tip, scoring the first 20 points of the contest. The Mountaineers missed their first 14 shots of the game before scoring their first basket by Norfleet at the 10:33 mark of the half.

The Wildcats stretched the lead to 29-to-5 on a Crawford baseline jumper before the Mount (3-10) responded with an 11-to-2 run.

Norfleet started the spurt with a three-pointer and Tayvon Jackson added back-to-back 18-foot jumpers. Lamar Trice chipped in a steal and a drive to the basket and Barber capped the run with a jumper in the lane.

Northwestern, however, scored the final eight points of the half for a 39-16 lead at the break. The Mount shot 7-of-30 (.233) from the floor in the opening half while committing nine turnovers. Northwestern shot 15-of-31 (.484) in the half and held a 23-to-21 edge on the boards.

In the second half, Northwestern opened the half with an 11-2 run to take a 50-18 advantage. The lead was 68-37 with 3:13 left before the Mountaineers closed the contest with a 10-2 run. Norfleet scored seven points in that stretch while Cleveland added a three-pointer.

The Mount shot 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the field in the second half, including 5-of-11 from three-point range.

For the game, the Mountaineers shot 36.4 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three-point range. Northwestern shot 47.5 percent and was 6-for-24 from beyond the arc.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, December 29, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Vermont.

Game Notes...Freshman guard David Golladay did not make the trip due to family reasons...The Mount is 0-10 all-time against teams in the Big 10 Conference...This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
