Binghamton Upends Women's Basketball, 53-39

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Binghamton defeated Mount St. Mary's 53-39 in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) paced the Mount (1-8) with a season-high 10 points and six rebounds while Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) tallied six points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Viive Rebane led the Bearcats (6-4) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Jasbriell Swain added 12 points and Orla O'Reilly chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.

Binghamton jumped out to the lead from the opening tip and never lost the margin to earn the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Bearcats scored 10 of the first 12 points in the game to grab a 10-2 advantage. Andrea Holmes started the scoring with a layup at 18:39 before Swain nailed a 3-pointer at 17:24 to hand Binghamton a 5-0 edge.

Dunn got Mount St. Mary's on the scoreboard with a layup at 16:56 to trim the deficit to 5-2 before the Bearcats rolled off the next five points. O'Reilly hit a jumper at 16:25, Jackie Ward made her second free throw at 12:46 and Simone Thomas scored in the paint at 12:08 in the spurt.

The Mount then trimmed the margin to four points four times over the next seven minutes. After Thomas' basket, Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) hit her first charity toss at 11:41 and Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) nailed a 3-pointer at 11:37 to cut the deficit to 10-6.

Rebane and Dunn then traded points to maintain the four-point difference before Rebane scored in the paint and Ward drilled a trey to increase the Bearcats advantage to 17-8. Mann then scored the next five points to make it a four-point game again at 17-13 with 5:14 left in the first half. Fueled by six points by Rebane, Binghamton closed the first half on an 11-5 run to go into the locker room with a 28-18 lead.

Mount St. Mary's opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to trim the margin to 30-24. After Swain converted two free throws at 18:55 to give the Bearcats a 30-18 advantage, Andresson hit a 3-ball at 17:50 and Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) knocked down one of her own from behind the arc 37 seconds later.

O'Reilly ended the run with a 3-pointer at 15:44, but the Mountaineers would cut the deficit to six points on last time at 34-28 after Dunn hit two free throws at 11:10. Binghamton then closed the game with a 19-11 run to seal the victory.

Dunn became the 10th player in program history and the sixth player in Mount Division I history to haul in 700 rebounds for her career and now stands at 703. The senior also moved into fifth place on the program's all-time career start list (97) and 27th in career points (908).

Christie finished the game with eight points, four rebounds and three assists while Mann posted six points, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) chipped in a season-high six points and a career-high six rebounds for the Mountaineers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday when the squad travels to Sacred Heart to open up Northeast Conference play. Game time is 7 p.m.
