Women's Basketball Returns To Knott Arena To Host Binghamton On Saturday

opening tip...

Saturday's game between Mount St. Mary's and Binghamton marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
• The Mount has only faced UMBC from the America East Conference. The Mountaineers are 28-9 all-time against the Retrievers, but 1-2 against the Baltimore program since it joined the America East in 2003-04.
• The Bearcats are 6-6 against the Northeast Conference: Sacred Heart (2-4), Bryant (2-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) and Wagner (1-1). Binghamton could also face Monmouth in the second day of the Monmouth Hawk Holiday Classic on Dec. 30.

about the bearcats... Binghamton comes into the contest 5-4 after defeating Massachusetts 58-52 on Saturday.
• Junior G Orla O'Reilly paced the Bearcats with 16 points against the Minutewomen. The junior ranks fifth on the team with 10.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
• Junior G Andrea Holmes added 12 points against UMass after posting 21 points in a 72-59 victory against Seina on Dec. 7 to earn America East Player of the Week honors. Holmes leads the team with 15.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
• Junior F Viive Rebane added 20 points against the Saints. She is averaging 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore F Kara Elofson also found double figures against Siena, finishing with 13 points. The sophomore ranks third on the team with 11.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

bffs off the court, but on different sides on Saturday... Mount St. Mary's junior Sandra Andresson and Binghamton F Viivane Rebane grew up together in Tallinn, Estonia and played together at the Audentes School.

international battle... Saturday's game features players from four different countries on both teams. Along with the United States, Canada, Estonia and Ireland will also be represented in the first-ever meeting between the Mount and Binghamton.

last time out... Loyola defeated Mount St. Mary's 74-58 on Dec. 11. Senior Mary Dunn paced the Mount with 18 points and six rebounds while sophomore Selina Mann added 10 points in the loss.

quick hits on loyola game... Loyola jumped out to an 11-0 advantage in the first three minutes and four seconds. The Mount cut the deficit to five points at 34-29 with 5:17 left in the first half, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
• Senior Mary Dunn scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. The senior moved into 10th place in program history for career rebounds (695) and also became the 27th player in program history to reach 900 points in her career. Dunn needs 98 points to become the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career.
• It marked only the second time this season a Mount player scored more than 15 points in a contest and the first since sophomore Sydney Henderson notched a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14. The Mount has 12 double-figure performances in the first eight games.
• Sophomore Selina Mann notched her second-straight 10-point game after posting 10 points against the Greyhounds. Mann is averaging 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game in her last two contests.
• Freshman Ashley Christie chipped in nine points and a career-high five assists against Loyola.

three-pointer to start scoring is deadly for the mount... Mount St. Mary's registered a 3-pointer for its first field goal of the game six times this season. The Mount is 0-6 in those games.
• The squad has hit a trey to start its scoring against Virginia (Nov. 14), Cincinnati (Nov. 23), Towson (Dec. 1), Pittsburgh (Dec. 4), Navy (Dec. 8) and Loyola (Dec. 11).
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman has hit the squad's opening 3-pointer in four of the six games.
• The Mountaineers are 1-1 when its first field goal comes from inside the arc.

it all starts with defense... The opponent has scored 60 points in seven of the eight games in 2010-11 and is averaging 68.3 points per game.
• Last season, the Mount allowed 60 points or more 11 times. The Mountaineers also ranked second in scoring defense (58.7 ppg.) in the Northeast Conference and 37th in Division I.
• The squad has allowed 60 points in each of the last five games. It is the first time under head coach Bryan Whitten Mount St. Mary's has allowed an opponent score 60 points in more than three-consecutive tilts.
• It also marks the first time since the final five games of the 2006-07 campaign the Mount has allowed 60 points in five-straight games.
• The Mount has allowed 60 points in a game 49 times under Whitten.

next on tap... The Mount opens Northeast Conference play at Sacred Heart on Monday.
• The game at the Pitt Center starts a four-game road trip with Mount St. Mary's playing two games in Connecticut and two tilts in California.
• The Mount returns to Knott Arena against Robert Morri, the defending NEC regular season champion, on Jan. 8.

at the knott... The Mount is 1-2 at home this season and is averaging 49.0 points per game at Knott Arena.
• The game against Binghamton marks the first tilt at home against a team not from the Maryland-Washington D.C area. Mount St. Mary's hosted American (Nov. 17), UMES (Nov. 20) and Towson (Dec. 1) in its three home games.
• Freshmen Ashley Christie and senior Mary Dunn are both averaging 10.0 points per game at home. Dunn is averaging 7.0 rebounds per game and Christie is averaging 3.7 boards per game.
• Dunn posted 10 points and 10 rebounds against UMES for the squad's only double-double this season and recorded 11 points against Towson at Knott Arena.
• Christie scored a career-high 14 points at home against the Hawks.
• Freshman Kayla Grossett is averaging 9.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game at home. The freshman has registered her only two double-digit performances at home after scoring a career-high 13 points against UMES and adding 11 points against Towson.

1,000-point countdown beginning... Senior Mary Dunn needs 98 points to become the program's 25th 1,000-point scorer.
• The senior would become the first Mount player since current assistant coach Brianna Gauthier accomplished the milestone in 2008-09. • Dunn has also moved into the programs Top-10 in rebounds (695) and games started (96).

its a shooting and rebounding thing... Mount St. Mary's is 0-7 this season when the opponents have a better shooting percentage than the Mount.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 26-10 when it has a better shooting performance, but just 7-53 when the opponents has a better shooting game.
• Rebounds have also been a concern with the opponent holding the edge in all seven games and the Mountaineers are currently -12.2 per game in rebounds.

in the non-conference slate... Mount St. Mary's is 72-115 in non-conference games since joining the Northeast Conference in 1989-90.

home sweet home... In its 24th season at Knott Arena, Mount St. Mary's has posted a 204-98 overall mark, including 69-43 in non-conference play and 135-55 in league play since moving across Route 15 from Memorial Gym.

board issues... Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in each of its first eight games this season. The Mount's opponent has held a 10-rebound edge in the Mountaineers' seven losses except Loyola while UMES only held a six-carom margin in the squad's only win.
• Mount St. Mary's has been outrebounded in 61 games under head coach Bryan Whitten, including 30 games with double-digit rebound deficits. The squad is 3-27 when the opponent holds a 10-board advantage.
• Last season, the Mount won the rebound battle in 50 percent of its games and had seven games when the opponent had a 10-carom margin.

that was a career day... Sophomore Sydney Henderson had a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Freshman Ashley Christie posted a career-high 14 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshman Kayla Grossett notched a career-high 13 points against UMES on Nov. 20.
• Freshman Kelly Guerriero had a career-best 10 points at Navy on Dec. 8.
• Freshman Jessie Kaufman each recorded a career-high nine points against Cincinnati on Nov. 23.

in the month... Mount St. Mary's is 103-88 in the month of December in program history. The Mount is 50-24 at home, 41-47 on the road and 12-17 at a neutral site in the month.
• The Mountaineers are 49-78 in December since switching to Division I in 1988-89. The team is 22-20 at Knott Arena, 18-43 on the road and 9-15 at a neutral site.
• Under head coach Bryan Whitten, the Mount is 3-18 overall, 1-4 at home, 2-13 on the road and 0-1 at a neutral site in the month.
• Mount St. Mary's played its first-ever contest in program history in the month of December, falling to Loyola 60-31 on Dec. 4, 1974.

bcs schools on the schedule... The first six games in the 2010-11 campaign could have arguably been the toughest start in program history.
• The Mount faced Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia in the season opener and Big East affiliates Cincinnati on Nov. 23 and Pittsburgh on Dec. 4.
• It marked the first time since the 2000-01 season the Mount will play three BCS schools when the squad faced Virginia (ACC), Georgia Tech (ACC) and Seton Hall (Big East).
• Mount St. Mary's also played three big conference schools in 1988-89 and 1994-95.

hearing your name called at the start... Head coach Bryan Whitten has only had 15 players start in his four-year tenure at the Mount.
• Senior Mary Dunn has started 96-straight games in her career.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks started 67 games in her career and 55 of the last 60 games.
• Junior Sandra Andresson has started 55 of the 68 games she has played.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson started 15 of the 26 games she has played, including 10 straight.
• Freshmen Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman have both started the first eight games of their collegiate career.

preseason poll... Mount St. Mary's was picked 11th according to the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Long Island, who advanced to the NEC Championship Game last season, received six first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while the defending league regular season champions Robert Morris was selected second after garnering three first-place nods. Sacred Heart placed third ahead of the defending NEC Tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.), who picked up two first place votes while Monmouth nabbed the final first-place vote to finish fifth in the poll. Quinnipiac, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, the Mount and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 12-team field.

the good and the bad for henderson... Sophomore Sydney Henderson scored a career-high 17 points against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Henderson scored 13 of her 17 points in the first eight minutes of the second half.
• After establishing a new career-high on her bucket with 12:01 left in the second half, the sophomore left the game with a knee injury.
• Henderson will miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury sustained in the game against Virginia.

let's play to 60 points... Mount St. Mary's is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when it scores 60 points in a game or holds the opponent under that total.
• The Mount is 19-11 when it scores 60 points in a game, but 14-51 when it does not reach 60 points.
• Defensively, the Mountaineers are 26-21 when the opponents are held under 60 points and 7-42 when the opponent reaches 60 points.

three keys to whitten success... The Mount is most successful under head coach Bryan Whitten when the squad leads at halftime, in rebounding or keeps the opponent under 60 points.
• The Mount is 25-13 when he holds the lead at halftime, 2-2 when the game is tied, but just 6-48 when trailing at the break.
• The squad is 15-14 when it holds a rebounding edge in a game, but just 16-45 when the opponent has the advantage and 2-4 when the two teams have equal boards.
• Mount St. Mary's is 26-21 when it holds opponents under 60 points.

hitting 20 points in a game... Senior Mary Dunn is the only player on the roster that has scored 20 points in a game in her career. The senior accomplished the feat twice last season when she posted a career-high 21 points against Colgate on Nov. 24, 2009 and had 20 points against Long Island on Jan. 16, 2010.
• The Mount has registered 16 20-point performances and two 30-point games under head coach Bryan Whitten. The squad is 9-7 when a player reaches 20 points and 2-0 when a player scores 30 in a contest.

dunn on the all-time lists... Senior Mary Dunn is making a mark on the program's all-time list.
• The senior currently sits in 28th place in program history with 902 career points. She can pass Paula Balkonis (907, 1987-91) with five points to move into 27th place and can jump ahead of Rose Stephens (925, 1976-80) with 24 points.
• The senior also ranks seventh in program history in rebounds per game (7.3 rpg.). Dunn moved into 10th place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 695 caroms after grabbing six boards against Loyola on Dec. 11. The senior can moved into ninth place and ahead of Bernadine Bocus (735, 1982-86) with 40 rebounds.
• Dunn also ranks seventh in Mount Division I history with 14 career double-doubles. She can move up a spot with three next double-double.
• The senior is also sixth on the Mount's games started list with 96 career starts and can move into fifth place with one start totie Amy Langville (97, 1993-97).

other players on the move... Along with senior Mary Dunn, the Mount has several players making a move on the program's all-time scoring chart.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks has 533 career points to rank 50th in program history and can move into 49th place with four points and into 48th place with 14 points. Westbrooks also ranks 13th in Mount Division I history with six double-doubles and can move into eighth place with four double-doubles.
• Junior Sandra Andresson currently sits in 61st place in program history with 372 points and can move into 60th place with 47 points.
• Sophomore Sydney Henderson has 160 career points to sit in 85th place. She can move into 84th place with 13 points and 83rd place with 15 points.
• Sophomore Selina Mann has 153 points for her career to rank 95th in team history and can move into 86th place with three points and 85th place with 20 points.

freshmen for one-two-three... Freshmen Jessie Kaufman, Ashley Christie, Rachel Mathews and Kayla Grossett each knocked down their first career shot attempt in the game against Virginia.
• Kaufman gave the Mount a 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer 35 seconds into the game and Christie nailed 3-ball of her own to reclaim the lead for the Mountaineers at 6-4 with 18:28 left in the first half.
• Mathews recorded a 3-point play the traditional way after scoring a layup at 15:55 and then converting the free throw to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-7 advantage.
• Grossett nailed a 3-pointer on her first collegiate attempt at 5:25 in the second half.

in their debut... The five freshmen each saw action against Virginia on Nov. 14.
• Ashley Christie and Jessie Kaufman both made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Christie posted 13 points, including 10 in the second half, along with two rebounds and two assists. Kaufman had eight points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.
• Kayla Grossett, Rachel Mathews and Kelly Guerriero each saw time off the bench. Grossett had six points and two rebounds while Mathews had three points, three rebounds and an assist. Guerriero played the final 1:55 and missed her own shot attempt. Guerriero notched her first collegiate point in the second half against American on Nov. 17.

tops in the league... Mount St. Mary's has posted the most wins in the Northeast Conference since joining the league in 1989-90 with 241 victories.
• The Mount has the third-most wins in league history, trailing only Monmouth (253) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (247).
• The Mount is 241-131 in Northeast Conference play, including 135-54 at Knott Arena and 106-77 on the road.

northeast conference history... Prior to last season, the Mount had advanced to 20-straight Northeast Conference Tournaments.
• Mount St. Mary's is 17-17 in the NEC Tournament.
• The Mountaineers have not won a tournament game since a 50-45 win against Sacred Heart on Mar. 4, 2001.
• Mount St. Mary's won tournaments in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95, including earning the league's first two NCAA Division I bids.

the underlining whit... Head coach Bryan Whitten is in his four season at the Mount in 2009-10. The Mount is 33-63 overall under Whitten.
• Whitten has defeated all 11 other teams in the NEC.
• The Mount is 15-29 overall at Knott Arena and 10-18 in NEC play under Whitten.
• The Mountaineers fair better on the road with an 18-34 overall mark away from Emmitsburg and 10- 16 in league play.
• Whitten picked up his first Mount win with a 55-51 decision at Lafayette on Nov. 17, 2007 and earned his 25th career in at Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2009.
• Whitten earned his 250th win of his career against Quinnipiac on Jan. 30, 2010.

foreign flavor... Mount St. Mary's has three international players on the roster at the same time for the first time in program history.
• Senior Leah Westbrooks (Ireland) was the third international player at the Mount, junior Sandra Andresson (Estonia) became the fourth international player in Emmitsburg and freshman Kayla Grossett (Canada) became the fifth international player at the Mount.
• The trio follows Katie Walton (Canada, 1998-02) and Dita Krumberga (Latvia, 2004-07).

new to the mountain... Fourth-year head coach Bryan Whitten added freshman Ashley Christie, Kayla Grossett, Kelly Guerriero, Jessie Kaufman and Rachel Mathews to the roster in 2010-11. Each player signed a National Letter of Intent last season.

coaching changes... For the third-straight season, head coach Bryan Whitten has made changes to his coaching staff. Denise King and Lisa Steele both moved up a chair while Whitten added Mount alumni Brianna Gauthier this season.
• King is in her second season at the Mount after serving as an assistant coach at Rhode Island for the last four years.
• Steele is also in her second season at the Mount after ending her four-year career at George Washington in 2008-09 after registering 206 points and 107 rebounds with the Colonials.
• Gauthier returns to the Mount after serving as an assistant coach under former Mount assistant Mark Zacher at Norwich, a Division III school in Vermont. A 2009 graduate of the Mount, she finished her career 18th in program history in all-time career points (1,128), second in 3-pointers made (164), second in 3-pointers attempted (490) and ninth in assists (335). Gauthier briefly played professionally in Sweden before joining the Norwich coaching staff last season.
