Women's Basketball Falls At Loyola, 74-58

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Loyola defeated Mount St. Mary's 74-58 in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) paced the Mount (1-7) with 18 points and six rebounds. With her six boards, the senior moved into 10th place on the program's all-time career rebounding list with 695 rebounds. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) added 10 points, four steals and three assists.

Erica DiClemente fueled the Greyhounds (3-6) with 23 points and eight rebounds. Miram McKenzie (16 points), Alyssa Sutherland (15 points) also found double figures while Katie Sheahin tallied 11 points and 11 assists in the winning effort.

Loyola jumped out to an early advantage and held on to earn its fifth-straight win in the in-state rivalry against Mount St. Mary's.

The Greyhounds opened the game by scoring the first 11 points. DiClemente started the scoring with a jumper at 19:17 before McKenzie converted two free throws at 18:43. After DiClemente scored in the paint at 18:18, Sutherland nailed a jumper at 17:28 for an 8-0 lead. McKenzie capped the surge with a 3-pointer at 16:54 for an 11-point advantage.

Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard with a trey at 16:34, but McKenzie answered with a 3-pointer of her own at 16:17 to restore the 11-point margin.

Loyola then went up 14 points midway through the first half before Mount St. Mary's went on an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 30-24 with 7:19 on the clock.

Dunn started the surge with a 3-pointer at 9:42 before Mann hit a 3-ball at 8:04 and Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) nailed a jumper at 7:19 to cap the 8-0 spurt and cut the deficit to six points.

Sutherland and Sheahin then scored four-straight points to retake a 10-point lead for the Greyhounds.

The Mount responded with a 5-0 run to cut the margin in half. Grossett scored in the paint at 6:22, Kaufman hit 1 of 2 at the free throw line at 5:53 and Dunn converted two charity tosses to trim the margin to 34-29 with 5:17 left in the stanza.

Sheahin hit back-to-back baskets and Meredith Tolley drilled a 3-pointer to give Loyola a 41-29 lead with 54 ticks on the clock. Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) answered with a 3-pointer with five seconds left to cut the margin to 41-32 going into the locker room.

Mount St. Mary's scored the first two baskets of the second half to once again make it a five-point game. Dunn scored on a layup at 18:58 and Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) also hit a bucket off the glass 28 seconds later to trim the score to 41-36.

The Greyhounds then scored seven unanswered points and the Mount could get no closer the rest of the way.

Christie finished the game with nine points and five assists

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Dec. 18 at home against Binghamton. Game time is 3 p.m.
