Baltimore, Md. (December 11, 2010)-Loyola used
an early 13-0 run to take control of the game en route to a 65-42
win over Mount St. Mary's in the 166th meeting of the
most-played rivalry in the state of Maryland. Junior Danny
Thompson had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks to pace
the Mount while David Golladay added eight points and two assists.
Julian Norfleet finished with five points, five rebounds and five
assists in the loss.
Loyola (4-5) scored 13 consecutive points early in the first
half to grab an 18-to-4 lead. Erik Etherly started the spurt with
a dunk while Shane Walker added a three-pointer and a dunk off an
alley-oop during the streak.
The Mount (3-7) used a 9-4 run to close the half and cut the
margin to 34-23 at the break. Freshman Norfleet scored all five of
his points during the run while Thompson and Golladay added buckets
as well.
Loyola sealed the win early in the second half, extending a
36-27 lead to 54-32 with 10:29 left in the game.
Walker finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Loyola
while Etherly added 17 points and nine boards.
The Mount shot 28.8 percent (17-of-59) from the floor in the
game and 2-of-13 (.154) from three-point range. Loyola converted
48.9 percent from the floor while hitting 5-of-11 (.455)
three-point shots.
The loss snaps the Mount's three-game win streak in the series
with the Mountaineers now leading the all-time series, 96-70. The
Mount has won seven of the past 10 meetings in the series that
began in 1910.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, December 18, at
Albany.
Game Notes: The Mountaineers are now 1-6 on
the road this season...This was the Mount's fourth game of a
five-game road swing to start December...Senior Shawn Atupem had
six points, giving him 892 for his career, one-point shy of
matching Jeff Hall (1988-92) for 50th on the Mount's
all-time scoring list.
