Women's Basketball Falls 67-47 At Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati downed Mount St. Mary's 67-47 in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Freshmen Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Arcbishop Malloy) each notched a career-high nine points for the Mount (1-3) in the loss.

Shelly Bellman paced the Bearcats (4-0) with 19 points while Daress McClung (13 points), Shareese Uils (11 points) and Tiffany Turner (10 points) also posted double figures in the winning effort.

Cincinnati used a strong start and end to the first half to take the advantage and never looked back to earn the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Kaufman gave the Mount an early lead at 3-0 on a 3-pointer 20 seconds into the match before the Bearcats rolled off the next nine points and 15 of 17 to grab a 15-5 advantage with 13:10 on the clock.

Turner started the surge with back-to-back layups before Bellman scored in the paint and nailed a 3-ball for a 9-3 margin with 15:05 remaining in the first half

Kaufman momentarily halted the Cincinnati surge with a layup at 14:42, but Uils and Bellman drained consecutive treys to extend the Bearcat lead to 15-10 seven minutes into the game.

Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) answered for the Mountaineers with a 3-pointer at 12:45 and Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) scored in the paint at 12:04 to trim the deficit to 15-10. After Uils and Chanel Chisholm each hit 1 of 2 at the free throw line, Christie drained a 3-pointer at 7:07 to make it a four-point contest at 17-13.

Cincinnati then ended the half on a 22-6 run to go into the locker room with a 39-19 advantage. Bellman and Uils started the surge with consecutive 3-pointers to power the run.

Mount St. Mary's played even with the Bearcats in the second half, but Cincinnati went on for the 67-47 victory.

Christie returned to her home state and recorded five points and a career-high six rebounds for the Mountaineers. Dunn finished with seven points.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Dec. 1 at home against Towson. Game time is 7 p.m.
