Women's Basketball Upends UMES For First Win Of The Season, 65-56

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) added a career-high 14 points to power Mount St. Mary's past UMES 65-56 in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.

Dunn keyed an 11-2 run in the second half to halt a Lady Hawks (1-1) comeback attempt with seven points. The senior went 4 of 7 from the field and 2 of 5 from the free throw line to finish with 10 points along with 10 boards for her 14th career double-double. Christie registered nine of her career-high 14 points in the second half to help the Mount (1-2) maintain the lead and earn its first win of the year. The freshman gave the Mountaineers the lead to stay in the first half and notched her second double-figure point performance in her first three games.

Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) added a career-best 13 points, including 10 points in the first half. Sophomore Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) chipped in a season-high eight points after going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the winning effort.

Amber Cook paced UMES with 14 points while Casey Morton (12 points) and Kwinnyata Mercer (10 points) also reached double figures in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead six minutes into the game and held on after the Lady Hawks rallied to cut the margin to one possession to earn its first win of the year and improve to 9-0 against UMES.

With the game tied at 10, Mount St. Mary's went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good. Christie gave the Mountaineers a 12-10 edge on a jumper at 13:17 and then nailed another jumper at 12:23 for a 14-10 lead. Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary) hit 1 of 2 at the foul line at 11:08 before Grossett drilled a 3-pointer at 10:41 for an 18-10 margin.

Karona Roach momentarily halted the run with a jumper at 10:16 before Grossett scored the next five points on a 3-ball at 9:56 and two free throws 12 seconds later. Grossett helped extend the lead to 13 points with 4:25 left in the stanza and the Mount went into the locker room with a 33-22 advantage.

In the second half with the Mountaineers holding a 39-27 lead, the Lady Hawks went on a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to 39-36 with 10:36 on the clock. Mercer started the spurt with a traditional 3-point play at 13:05 before Cook scored in the paint at 12:24. After Mercer hit a 3-pointer at 11:46, Caitlyn Dillard hit the backend of two free throws at 10:34 to make it a three-point game.

Dunn answered by hitting 1 of 2 at the line at 10:17, but Cook then scored in the paint at 9:47 to trim the deficit to 40-38. Christie went to the line and hit the first charity toss at 9:32, but missed the second at the line. Dunn grabbed the rebound out of the hands of Cook and scored off the glass to hand the Mount a 43-38 lead at 9:29.

Mount St. Mary's extended its advantage to 53-43 with 4:10 on the clock, but a 6-2 run by the Lady Hawks cut the margin to 55-49 with 2:43 left thanks to 3-balls by Morton and Cook. Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) answered with a layup at 2:15 to restore an eight-point lead.

UMES trimmed the lead to five points with 28 seconds left after a Mercer basket, but Mann and Christie went 4-for-4 from the line to seal the win.

The Mountaineers are 1-2 for the 15th time in program history and the first since the 2006-07 season. All nine players that played for the Mount scored in the game.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at Cincinnati. Game time is 7 p.m.
