RADFORD, Va. - Courtney Griffith (Westminster, Md./Westminster)
finished second in the 50 free to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's
swimming team to a sixth-place standing after the first day of
competition at the Radford Invitational on Thursday.
Griffith, the current Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week,
finished second in the 50 free with a time of 24.47 while teammate
Cat Coppler (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) finished fourth in the
event with a time of 24.60. The duo each posted a Top-6 time among
the NEC this season in the event.
The tandem helped the Mount take second in the 200-free relay
with a program-record time of 1:39.65. Griffith and Coppler swam
the first two legs of the relay before Mollie Walsh (Havertown,
Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and Joanna Hale (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern)
capped off the second-place finish. The time was also the
second-best mark in the league this year.
Patricia Yam (Placenta, Calif./Rosary) finished third in the 500
"B" finals and 11th overall. Her time of 5:15.03 was the sixth
fastest mark in the finals and a new school record. Walsh finished
13th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.07 to also set a new program
standard.
Walsh, Molly Kristiniak (Oreland, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy),
Yam and Hale finished 10th in the 400-medley relay (4:13.77) while
Murphy Alafoginis (Lawrenceville, Pa./Wellsboro Area), Jess Boegner
(White Hall, Md./North Harford), Victoria Shaw (Malvern, Pa./Villa
Maria Academy) and Jessica Gardner (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins
Mill) also picked up points in the event after finishing 14th
(4:50.52).
Georgia Southern leads the three-day event with a score of 255,
55 points ahead of Campbell (200) while Youngstown State (179),
Radford (118), Millersville (108), the Mount (96), Liberty (94) and
North Carolina A&T (8) round out the eight-team field.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday in the second day
of the Radford Invitational.
