Dunn-Oliver Tandem Fuels Women's Basketball To 86-57 Win Against Quinnipiac; Whitten Earns 250th Career Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) posted 19 points and Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) dished out a career-high 12 assists to give third-year head coach Bryan Whitten his 250th career victory and power Mount St. Mary's past Quinnipiac 86-57 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Dunn was perfect on the afternoon, going 6-for-6 from the field and 7 of 7 from the free throw line to finish with 19 points. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds. Oliver became the eighth player in Mount Division I history to record at least 10 assists in a game. The senior finished with 12 assists, six rebounds, four steals and two points. Whitten, who posted 220 wins as a head coach in 12 seasons at King's College, earned his 30th win at the Mount to give him 250 for his career.

Lauren Howell (Quinton, N.J./Sacred Heart) drained five 3-pointers for 15 points for the Mountaineers (8-12, 4-6 NEC) while Jamie Halloran (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) notched a career-high 13 points to help Mount St. Mary's notch the most points scored in a game under Whitten. The only other time the squad hit 80 points in a game under the coach was an 84-72 win against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 23, 2008.

Courtney Kaminski paced the Bobcats (9-12, 4-6 NEC) with 28 points and 11 rebounds. The senior posted 24 points in the first half.

The Mountaineers rallied from an early deficit to take the lead midway through the first half and never looked back to earn its first season sweep against Quinnipiac in program history and only its second win at Knott Arena against the Hamden program.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 15-9 advantage at the 11:50 mark sparked by 10 points from Kaminski before Mount St. Mary's answered with a 14-1 run to take the lead it would not relinquish.

Dunn started the rally with four points after scoring in the lane at 11:02 and hitting two free throws at 10:19 to trim the margin to 15-13. Halloran then tied the game at 15 with a layup at 9:42.

After Ryann Simmons momentarily regained the edge for Quinnipiac by making the frontend of two free throws at 9:22, Halloran gave the Mountaineers the lead it would not relinquish with a bucket in the paint at 8:49 and then extended the lead to three points with a jumper 37 seconds later. Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) then hit two charity tosses at 7:18 before Dunn capped the spurt with a layup at the 6:22 mark for a 23-16 advantage.

Lisa Lebak answered for the Bobcats with two free throws at the six-minute mark to trim the margin to 23-18. Mount St. Mary's went up 12 points after a Howell 3-pointer at 3:36, but Quinnipiac scored 12 of the final 19 points to trim the deficit to 40-33 going into the locker room. Kaminski fueled the run with 10 points.

The Mount started the second half on a 23-6 run to grab a 63-39 lead at the 10:47 mark. Henderson started the stanza with a 3-pointer at 19:47 before Dunn hit a jumper at 18:37 for a 45-33 advantage.

Lailah Pratt answered with a 3-pointer at 18:23 to trim the margin to 45-36. Dunn then hit a basket before Shelby Sferra hit a free throw at 16:18 and Kaminski drained a jumper at 15:27 to cut the deficit to 47-39.

Dunn then started a 16-0 run with a layup at 15:15 before Henderson and Halloran followed with baskets in the paint of their own. After Howell hit back-to-back 3-pointers, Cooke scored two baskets on breakaway layups to cap the run at 10:47 and hand the Mount a 63-39 advantage. Jacinda Dunbar halted the run with a jumper 16 seconds later, but Mount St. Mary's ended the game on a 23-16 run to earn the 29-point victory.

Along with Oliver and Halloran's career day, freshman Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) had a career-high eight points and Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tied a career best with nine points. Cooke stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, six assists and five steals.

Mount St. Mary's returns to the hardwood against Wagner on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.
