New York, N.Y. (January 23, 2010)-Long Island
jumped out to a 16-point first half lead and cruised from there for
a 67-58 win over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at the
Wellness Center. Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and
Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) each scored eight points
for the Mountaineers (5-14, 2-6 NEC) in the loss.
Goode tallied eight points, four steals and three assists in the
loss, but converted just 3-of-12 from the field and 1-of-5 from
three-point range in the game. Atupem was 4-for-7 from the field
for his eight points while freshman Raven Barber (Edgewood,
Md./Paul VI [Va.]) added a career highs of seven points and six
rebounds for the Mount. Fellow freshman Jacolby Wells (Emporia,
Va./Greensville County) added a career-high six points in the
loss.
Kenny Onyechi and Jaytornah Wisseh each had a game-high 15
points to pace the Blackbirds to the win while Kyle Johnson and
David Hicks added 10 points each.
LIU outrebounded the Mount, 38-32, in the game while shooting
45.5 percent overall and 43.8 percent from three-point range in the
game. The Mountaineers shot 41.2 percent and were just 12-of-23
(.522) at the foul line in the game.
Mount St. Mary's took an early 7-5 lead after a Kelly Beidler
(Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) post move with 15:54 left in the
opening half. The Blackbirds (8-11, 6-2 NEC), however, took
control of the game, using a 25-to-7 spurt to grab a 30-14
advantage with 3:53 left in the half. Onyechi had seven points and
Wisseh six in the streak for LIU.
The Mountaineers were able to cut the gap to 34-25 at the half
on a Pierre Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) three-pointer and a
Holland free throw in the final minute.
Mount St. Mary's was able to cut the deficit to 43-36 on a Will
Holland (Houston, Texas/Lamar) three-pointer with 12:01 left in the
game. Long Island countered with an Arnold Mayorga three-pointer
and a David Hicks traditional three-point play to push the margin
back to 49-36. From there, the Blackbirds were able to hold off
the Mount for the victory.
The Mount returns home to face Sacred Heart on Thursday, January
28, at 7:30 p.m. at Knott Arena.
Game Notes...The Mount has played six of its
first eight NEC games on the road...The Mountaineers will play
seven of its final 10 games at home...The Mount has won seven of
the past nine meetings with Long Island and the series is now tied,
22-22.
