Emmitsburg, Md. (January 16, 2010)--Jeremy
Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and Kelly Beidler (Virginia
Beach, Va./Tallwood) each posted double-doubles to lead Mount St.
Mary's to an 86-67 win over Northeast Conference leader Long Island
at Knott Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Mount St. Mary's (5-12, 2-4 NEC) scored the first six points of
the game and never looked back en route to the win. Goode hit a
pair of jumpers while Raven Barber (Edgewood, Md./Paul VI [Va.])
opened the game with a basket to give the Mount its hot start.
The Mount stretched the lead to double figures at 20-9 on a
Tayvon Jackson (Indian Head, Md./Lackey) jumper with 6:45 into the
contest. The Blackbirds scored the next four points, but the Mount
answered with a 17-to-2 spurt to grab a 37-15 lead with 3:53 left
in the half. Will Holland (Houston, Texas/Lamar) buried
back-to-back three-pointers to start the run for the Mountaineers,
which was capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Jean Cajou
(Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) and Beidler.
The Mount shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the opening half
to take a 44-23 lead at the break. Goode dished out nine of his
game-high 10 assists in the opening frame while Beidler had 11
points and six boards in the first half.
The Blackbirds whittled the lead down to 13 after a Jaytornah
Wisseh three-pointer, but Cajou answered with a triple on the other
end for a 61-45 lead with 9:33 left in the game. From there, the
Mount was able to coast to the victory.
Goode paced the Mount with 17 points and 10 assists for his
second career double-double. Beidler added 15 points and 11
rebounds for his second-straight double-double and eighth of his
career. It was the first time since Jan. 26, 2002, that the Mount
had two players post double-doubles in the same game. In that
game, Pat Atangana (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Angel Rivera (10
points and 12 rebounds) hadd double-doubles against Fairleigh
Dickinson.
Jackson added a career-high 12 points while grabbing six
rebounds fo rthe Mount while Cajou finished with 16 points, hitting
4-of-6 from three-point range in the game. Shawn Atupem (Newport
News, Va./Woodside) added eight points and Danny Thompson
(Springdale, Md./CH Flowers) chipped in six points and five boards
in the win.
Kenny Onyechi had a team-high 13 points for LIU while Michael
Culpo added 11 points off the bench.
The Mount shot a season-high 59.6 percent from the field in the
game. It was the first time all season the Mount has shot over 50
percent in a game. The Blackbirds finished 20-of-59 (.339) from
the field in the game. The Mount held a 39-to-27 edge on the
boards while dishing out a season-high 20 assists and scoring a
season-high 86 points in the game.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday, January 21, with a 7:30
p.m. game at St. Francis (N.Y.).
