Emmitsburg, Md. (May 2, 2009)--Mount St. Mary's
dropped a doubleheader to visiting Monmouth, 19-5 and 8-1, at E.T.
Straw Family Stadium on campus on Saturday afternoon. The Mount
drops to 18-22 overall and 10-8 in the Northeast Conference with
the losses.
Leading 2-0 after five innings of play, Monmouth scored 17 runs
over the final four innings to earn the 19-5 victory in the opening
game. Brett Holland, Chris Collazo and Jamie Rosenkranz each went
4-for-6 in the game to pace the Hawks (24-19, 11-7 NEC).
Rosenkranz added a home run and four RBI in the game while Holland,
Ryan Terry, Collazo and Josh Boyd each had three RBI in the
contest.
For the Mount, Matt Staso went 2-for-4 while Joe Kavanagh had a
two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter
Steve Benvenuto added an RBI base hit in the bottom of the ninth as
well for the Mount.
Starting pitcher Max Brittenham (3-4) allowed 10 runs (nine earned)
in six-plus innings with seven strikeouts to take the loss. Brett
Brach struck out 10 batters while allowing an unearned run in eight
innings to earn the win for Monmouth.
In the second game, Monmouth scored six runs in the top of the
seventh to break open a 2-0 game and earn the win. Mount starter
Brady Feigl (3-2) allowed a pair of solo home runs over the first
six innings as Monmouth took the 2-0 lead. Nick Pulsonetti drove a
3-2 pitch over the center field fence in the top of the first to
give Monmouth the lead while Jamie Rosenkranz belted a solo shot in
the fifth for a two-run advantage.
The Mount had several chances to score of Monmouth starter Ryan
Buch, who stranded 10 Mount St. Mary's runners in the game,
including getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom
of the fourth.
In the seventh, Collazo hit a two-run single ahead of a three-run
homer from Paul Bottigliero. Rosenkranz also added a solo shot in
the seventh, his second home run of the game and third on the
day.
Shane Eyler went 2-for-4 to pace the Mount offense while Tommy
Flynn belted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh
inning to break out Buch's shutout bid. Feigl ended up allowing
eight earned runs with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings in the loss.
Buch sturck out 10 in seven innings to earn the complete-game
win.
Rosenkranz went 6-for-9 with five runs scored, three home runs and
six RBI in the twinbill for Monmouth.
The teams will complete the four-game series with a noon
doubleheader tomorrow at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
