Emmitsburg,
Md. (April 7, 2009)--James Madison
outslugged Mount St. Mary's, 21-12, in a non-conference matchup at
a windy E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Matt Staso (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) went
3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI to pace the Mount
(12-11) in the loss.
With the wind
gusting to right field, James Madison belted 11 home runs to power
to the victory. The game started off promising as the Mountaineers
built an 8-5 lead after three innings of play.
Shane Eyler
(Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) singled up the middle to plate
Staso in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Kyle Kane
then scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 Mount lead.
Chris Johnson
belted a two-run homer in the top of the second for the Dukes
(17-15), but the Mount scored four times in the bottom half of the
frame for a 6-3 advantage. Staso doubled to left field to plate
Michael Foster (Easton, Md./Easton) and Tommy Flynn (Reston,
Va./South Lakes), who opened the inning with a single and a walk,
respectively. Kane added a sacrifice fly while Josh Winter
(Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) laced an RBI single to right field to
give the Mount a three-run cushion.
David Herbek
cracked a two-run homer to left-center field to cut the Mount lead
to 6-5, but Staso's two-run single to center field in the bottom of
the third gave the Mount an 8-5 advantage.
The Dukes took
the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning. Bryan Leskanec
and Evan Scott led off the frame with a back-to-back solo home runs
while Trevor Knight chipped in an RBI triple to tied the game at
8-8. Herbek plated Knight with a single to left for a 9-8 James
Madison lead.
Mike Fabiaschi
homered to lead off the fifth to give James Madison a 10-8 lead,
but the Mount answered with a Flynn RBI double in the bottom of the
inning to make the score 10-9.
James Madison
then took control of the game with a 10-run sixth inning. Matt
Townsend homered to open the inning, Matt Browning added a
three-run shot and Lescanec a two-run homer to make the score
16-9. Knight belted a three-run homer with Herbek adding a solo
shot in the inning as well.
Joe Kavanagh
(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) drew a bases loaded walk in the
bottom of the sixth for the Mount that was countered by a Johnson
RBI double off the top of the right-field fence in the seventh.
Kane closed out the scoring in the game with his third home run of
the season for the Mountaineers, a two-run blast to right field in
the bottom of the seventh.
Staso went
3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI to pace the Mount in the
game. He now leads the team with 23 runs scored and 21 RBI on the
year. Kane went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and three
RBI for the Mount while Foster added a 3-for-5 day with two runs
scored.
The Dukes had
11 home runs by eight different players in the game. James
Madison's first five hits in the contest were home runs. Knight
went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBI to pace James
Madison while Herbek was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI. The
top three hitters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-13 with 11
runs scored and 10 RBI in the game.
James Weiner
earned the win, allowing two earned runs in 3.0 innings of relief.
Jason Kuhn allowed two unearned runs in 3.2 innings of relief to
earn the save. Mudgett took the loss, allowing four runs in one
inning of relief of starter Marshall Thomason. Chris McDermott
(Boyds, Md./Damascus) and Andrew Schrock (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) each pitched on inning of scoreless relief for the
Mountaineers.
The Mount
returns to action on Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Long
Island. The game is the first of a four-game NEC series against
the Blackbirds.
