EMMITSBURG,
Md. Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) ended
her career on a high note, tossing a five-inning complete-game
one-hitter to lead Mount St. Mary's past Morgan State 8-0 in the
nightcap of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday. The
Bears won the opener, 9-6.
Fowler
allowed a bunt base hit in the third inning for the lone hit in the
contest and registered six strikeouts. Fowler, who became the
program's all-time leader in strikeouts against Coppin State on
Wednesday, notched her 14th win of the year to tie former teammate
Maria Lutz (14, 2006) for the most wins in a single season in the
Mount's Division I era. In addition, the senior smacked a single
off the third base bag in the sixth inning for her first hit of the
year in only bat in her senior campaign. She also recorded the
final two outs in the opener.
Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had three hits, two runs
scored and an RBI for the Mount (18-30) while Nicole Reeder (Glen
Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had three hits, three RBIs and a
run scored in the twinbill.
In the
nightcap with Fowler breezing along, Mount St. Mary's scored eight
runs in the first three innings to put the game away.
Taylor
Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) started a three-run rally in the
first when she was hit by the pitch before Zingle single to left
field. Beebe then came home on Reeder's RBI single and Zingle
touched home on Beth Everist's (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) groundout
while Reeder scored thanks to a Bears' error on the play for a 3-0
advantage.
Jenna
Zimmerman (Walkesrville, Md./Walkersville) singled up the middle to
start the second and came around to score on Zingle's single to
increase the lead to four runs.
The
Mountaineers then put the game away in the third with four runs to
take an 8-0 lead. Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) walked and
Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) single up the
middle. Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) reached
on an error to allow Lodato to score and then Fusco touched home
when Donovan stole second and the throw went into center field for
a 6-0 margin. Zimmerman plated Donovan on a double through the left
side and Amanda Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) capped the
rally with a run-scoring single up the middle.
In the
opener, Morgan State grabbed a 4-0 advantage thanks to two runs in
the first and third.
Mount St.
Mary's answered with three runs in the bottom of the third when
Zimmerman hit a sacrifice fly to plate Donovan and Lodato also
crossed home courtesy of an error on the play and Reeder brought
home Beebe with a single up the middle to make it a one-run
ballgame.
The Bears
reclaimed a four-run lead with three runs in the fifth to take a
7-3 lead.
Reeder
got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to bring
home Zingle.
Morgan
State answered right back with a run in the sixth while the
Mountaineers scored twice in the inning thanks to Beebe and Fusco
RBIs to trim the margin to 8-6. The Bears then sealed the win with
an insurance run in the seventh.
Mount St.
Mary's concludes it season 18-30. The squad finished 10-8 in league
play, marking the third time in program history the squad had a
winning mark in the NEC slate.
