EMMITSBURG,
Md. Senior Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown)
tossed a four-hit shutout and set two program records to fuel Mount
St. Mary's past Coppin State 3-0 in the opening game of a
non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday. The Mountaineers
won the nightcap, 5-1.
Coming
into the afternoon, Fowler needed 10 strikeouts to overtake Zena
Edwards (391, 1987-89) for the top strikeout mark in program
history. The senior finished with 11 strikeouts to become the
program's new all-time strikeout leader with 393 K's. In addition,
Fowler established a new Mount Division I program record for career
wins with her 37th win, breaking former teammate Maria Lutz's (36,
2003-06) old standard. Fowler earned her 13th win of the year after
scattering four hits in a complete-game effort.
Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) recorded two hits and two RBIs
in the opener for the Mount (17-29) while Allie Vadas (Spring Lake
Heights, N.J./Manasquan) went 3-for-3 with her first collegiate
home run in the nightcap. Amanda Sadowl (Horsham,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed an unearned run on two hits with five
strikeouts for her fourth win of the year and Taylor Beebe
(Olympia, Wash./Capital) had three hits and a run scored on the
afternoon.
Charma
Robinson had a hit and a run scored for the Eagles (5-24) and
Stephanie Watts recorded the lone RBI in the nightcap.
In
the opening game, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early
advantage and never looked back for the 3-0 victory.
Beebe
opened the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. After
Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) reached on an error,
Zingle belted a double to right center to bring home both Beebe and
Burk to hand the Mount a 2-0 edge.
The
Mountaineers added to its lead in the sixth with an insurance run.
Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled on a
bunt, moved to second on an error on the play, went to third on a
wild pitch and touched home on Jenna Zimmerman's (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) single to center for a 3-0 advantage.
In
the nightcap, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the lead in the first
inning. Beebe recorded her team-leading 14th double of the year to
start the stanza, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on
another wild pitch for a 1-0 edge.
The
Mount added two runs in the fourth with some help from Coppin
State. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), who
had two hits in the contest, singled through the left side to start
the inning. With one out, Vadas singled to third base and then
stole second. Donovan then walked while Reeder scored on a wild
pitch on the fourth ball to Donovan. Attempting a double steal with
first and third, Vadas scored on an error in a run down for a 3-0
advantage.
In
the sixth, Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) reached on a
fielder's choice before Vadas smacked a dinger over the Sheetz sign
in right center to hand the Mountaineers a 5-0
advantage.
The
Eagles scored on an unearned run in the seventh on a Watts grounder
to short, but could get no closer.
Mount
St. Mary's concludes its season at home against Morgan State on
Thursday. Game time is 3 p.m.
