Fowler Sets Two Program Records In Softball's Sweep Against Coppin State

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Senior Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) tossed a four-hit shutout and set two program records to fuel Mount St. Mary's past Coppin State 3-0 in the opening game of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday. The Mountaineers won the nightcap, 5-1.

Coming into the afternoon, Fowler needed 10 strikeouts to overtake Zena Edwards (391, 1987-89) for the top strikeout mark in program history. The senior finished with 11 strikeouts to become the program's new all-time strikeout leader with 393 K's. In addition, Fowler established a new Mount Division I program record for career wins with her 37th win, breaking former teammate Maria Lutz's (36, 2003-06) old standard. Fowler earned her 13th win of the year after scattering four hits in a complete-game effort.

Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) recorded two hits and two RBIs in the opener for the Mount (17-29) while Allie Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) went 3-for-3 with her first collegiate home run in the nightcap. Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed an unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts for her fourth win of the year and Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) had three hits and a run scored on the afternoon.

Charma Robinson had a hit and a run scored for the Eagles (5-24) and Stephanie Watts recorded the lone RBI in the nightcap.

In the opening game, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early advantage and never looked back for the 3-0 victory.

Beebe opened the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. After Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) reached on an error, Zingle belted a double to right center to bring home both Beebe and Burk to hand the Mount a 2-0 edge.

The Mountaineers added to its lead in the sixth with an insurance run. Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled on a bunt, moved to second on an error on the play, went to third on a wild pitch and touched home on Jenna Zimmerman's (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) single to center for a 3-0 advantage.

In the nightcap, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the lead in the first inning. Beebe recorded her team-leading 14th double of the year to start the stanza, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch for a 1-0 edge.

The Mount added two runs in the fourth with some help from Coppin State. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), who had two hits in the contest, singled through the left side to start the inning. With one out, Vadas singled to third base and then stole second. Donovan then walked while Reeder scored on a wild pitch on the fourth ball to Donovan. Attempting a double steal with first and third, Vadas scored on an error in a run down for a 3-0 advantage.

In the sixth, Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) reached on a fielder's choice before Vadas smacked a dinger over the Sheetz sign in right center to hand the Mountaineers a 5-0 advantage.

The Eagles scored on an unearned run in the seventh on a Watts grounder to short, but could get no closer.
