Softball Splits With Quinnipiac; Three-Run Fourth Propels Mount To 3-0 Game-One Win

HAMDEN, Conn. – Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) posted two hits and two RBIs to lead Mount St. Mary's past Quinnipiac 3-0 in the first game of a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Bobcats came back to win the nightcap, 4-0.

Reeder knocked in two runs in the Mount's (13-29, 8-8 NEC) three-run fourth on a single and also added a single in the second inning.

Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) pitched a five-hit shutout with four strikeouts for her 11th win of the year in the opener.

Heather Schwartzburg tossed a one-hit shutout with five strikeouts while Emily Bellush had a two-run homer in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Mountaineers broke open a scoreless standstill with three runs in the fourth to go on for a 3-0 victory.

Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) started the rally with consecutive singles before Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) loaded the bases after being hit by the pitch. Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) coaxed a bases loaded walk before Reeder brought home Burk and Zingle on a two-run single to hand Mount St. Mary's a 3-0 advantage.

Quinnipiac had its chances in the game, but could not convert. In the first, the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out before Fowler got out of the jam with a fielder's choice and a strikeout. Quinnipiac put two runners on base in the sixth with two outs, but the threat ended after a pop out. Christine Bourdeau double with one out in the seventh, but was left at third after Fowler ended the game with a strikeout.

In the nightcap, Quinnipiac scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to come away with a 4-0.

Bellush smacked a two-run homer in the fourth to hand the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Katie Allendorfer added an RBI groundout in the fifth and Bourdeau sealed the victory with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Swartzburg retired the first 14 Mount St. Mary's batters she faced until Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) singled through the right side with two outs in the fifth to end the no-hitter. Swartzburg then retired the final seven hitters to earn the complete-game one hitter.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at Central Connecticut State. First pitch is 12 p.m.
