EMMITSBURG,
Md. Robert Morris defeated Mount St. Mary's 7-3 in Northeast
Conference (NEC) softball action on Thursday. The game was a makeup
from a Mar. 29 doubleheader after the second contest was postponed
due to heavy rain.
Kristin
Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) paced the Mount (12-28,
7-7 NEC) with two hits and two RBIs. Lisa Curreri (Clinton,
N.J./North Hunterdon) and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) each added two hits in the loss.
Brooke
Panepinto fueled the Colonials (22-16, 9-3 NEC) with three hits,
two RBIs and a run scored while Allie Patton had three hits, a run
scored and an RBI in the winning effort.
Robert
Morris jumped out to the advantage and never looked back to
complete the sweep and earn its fourth-straight win against the
Mountaineers.
The
Colonials jumped on the scoreboard in the first when Panepinto
plated a run on a triple and then scored on Susan Perich's single
to left field for a 2-0 advantage.
Kayla
Crooks added to the Robert Morris lead when she smacked her first
home run of the year to left field for a 3-0 edge. Allie Patton then knocked in a run in
the fourth on a triple to deep center.
Mount St.
Mary's got on the scoreboard in the sixth thanks to some help from
its guests. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Carroll)
doubled to left field and Fusco reached on an infield single with
one out. After Robert Morris got the second out, Zimmerman hit the
ball to the second baseman, but she made a throwing error trying to
get Fusco out at second and Reeder came around to score to trim the
deficit to 4-1.
The
Colonials then added three runs in the seventh thanks to RBIs by
Lauren Nisivoccia, Panepinto and Perich to grab a 7-1
advantage.
The Mount
came back in the seventh to score two runs, but could get no
closer. With one out, Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson)
started the rally by singling through the right side before
Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) singled to center
field. The middle infielder for Robert Morris helped the
Mountaineers again on the next play, but this time it was the
shortstop having the throwing error trying to get Zingle at second
base while Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) reached on a
fielder's choice on the play. With two outs, Fusco singled to
center field to plate Burk and Zingle to make the score 7-3. Alexa
Bryson ended the game when she got a lineout to third base. Bryson
allowed three unearned runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts in a
complete-game victory.
Burk
walked in the third inning to tie the program record for career
walks with 55 bases on balls. The senior now holds nine career
program records.

Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Quinnipiac. First pitch is
