Softball Competes NEC Weekend Sweep With Two Wins Against Fairleigh Dickinson

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) picked up her 10th win in the opener and then earned her first save to help Mount St. Mary's sweep Fairleigh Dickinson in Northeast Conference (NEC) softball action on Sunday.

Fowler, who tossed a nine-inning complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win against Sacred Heart on Saturday, allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort for her 10th victory of the season. The senior then came into the nightcap to record the final two outs with a strikeout for her first career save.

Freshman Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), who notched her first collegiate win yesterday against the Pioneers in the second game, allowed three runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched of the second game on Sunday to notch her second win in as many days. Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) added three hits and two runs scored for the Mount (12-27, 7-6 NEC) while Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) registered three hits and two runs in the twinbill.

Mount St. Mary's has won four-straight for the first time since Mar. 29-30, 2008 when the Mountaineers defeated Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State. The squad also swept an NEC weekend for the first time since 2006 when the Mountaineers took a pair from Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson on Apr. 9-10, 2006. Mount St. Mary's, who moved into fifth place in the NEC standings, has seven league wins for the first time since the 2006 when the Mount went 14-6 on its way to its last NEC Tournament appearance.

Justina Augustine paced the Knights (9-31, 4-12 NEC) with five hits and an RBI, Lindsay Bradac added four hits and an RBI in the doubleheader.

In the opener, Mount St. Mary's was aided by four Fairleigh Dickinson errors to come away with a 3-2 victory.

The Mount took a 1-0 lead in the first. Curreri was the catalyst for the run when she led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on an error. After the junior stole third, Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) singled through the right side to plate Curreri.

Fairleigh Dickinson tied the game in the fourth thanks to a Bradac RBI double to right center, but the Mountaineers answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the stanza. Zingle started the decisive rally with a single through the left side and Everist singled downed the left field line while both runners moved up on an error on the play before the duo touched home on an error to hand Mount St. Mary's a 3-1 edge,

The Knights cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh, but could get no closer. Kim Carbaugh opened the inning with a double to right center and came around to score on Augustine's RBI single through the left side. Fairleigh Dickinson had the bases loaded with two outs after Bradac reached on a pop up base hit in the infield, but then Fusco aided Fowler by making a diving catch in center field to end the game.

Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the nightcap and never looked back to earn a 5-3 win. Curreri again started the Mount rally in the opening inning by reaching on a walk. With two out, Curreri scored on Beth Everist's (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) RBI single through the right side. After Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) singled to left and Fusco was hit by the pitch, Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) singled to left field to plate Everist with the second run. Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) singled through the left side to bring home Reeder before Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) capped the four-run outburst with an RBI infield hit.

The Mountaineers then added a run in the third to grab a 5-0 lead. Fusco doubled down the left field line, moved to second on Lodato's ground out and touched home on an error on a failed pickoff attempt at third.

The Knights struck back for two runs in the fourth on Allaire Primiano's two-run single to right field to trim the margin to 5-2.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored one in the seventh and threatened to make the game even tighter, but could not convert. With two outs and runners at the corners, Brittany Sheppard singled to left field to plate the Knights third run. Fowler replaced Sadowl on the mound and recorded a strikeout and a pop up for Curreri at second base to end the game and complete the sweep.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday at home against George Mason. First pitch is 3 p.m.
