Emmitsburg,
Md. (April 19, 2009)Mount
St. Mary's scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to
complete a four-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with a 7-4
victory in Northeast Conference action at E.T. Straw Family Stadium
on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Matt Staso (Ellicott
City, Md./Mount St. Joseph) went 3-for-5 with two stolen
bases in the win while Alex Andrews (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
doubled to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth
inning.
Mount
St. Mary's (17-16, 9-3 NEC) used a three-run rally in the eighth to
earn the win and maintain first place in the NEC standings. Josh Winter (Timonium, Md./Boys'
Latin) opened the eighth with a double to right-center
field for the Mountaineers and moved to third on a Joe Kavanagh (Huntingtown,
Md./Huntingtown) sacrifice bunt. Andrews then laced a double to left
field to drive home pinch runner Buddy Fields (Manassas,
Va./Stonewall Jackson) with the go-ahead run.
Tommy
Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) gave the Mount an insurance run
when he doubled home Andrews to make the score 6-4. Staso then singled through the left
side to give the Mount a three-run margin.
Reliever
Brett Moore (Clifton,
Va./Paul VI) got the first two outs in the ninth before
yielding to closer Mike Matta (Woodbridge,
Va./Potomac), who got the final out for his fifth save of
the year. Matta went 2-0
with two saves in the four-game sweep for the Mount.
Mount
St. Mary's struck first when Flynn struck out, but reached base on
a wild pitch to open the bottom of the first. Staso singled Flynn to third on a
perfectly executed hit-and-run and Flynn came home to score on a
groundout by Jacob Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas
Johnson).
Fairleigh
Dickinson (9-22, 4-8 NEC) answered that run with two in the top of
the second. Matt Maher
singled home Ryan Kresky to even the score and Jeff Vincent's
sacrifice fly put the Knights ahead 2-1.
The
Mount regained the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom
of the third. Darr reached
base on an error with one out and moved to second on Kyle Kane's (Boonsboro,
Md./Boonsboro) base hit. The runners moved up on a wild pitch,
and Shane Eyler
(Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) drove home Darr with a
grounder to short. Winter
then singled home Eyler for a 3-2 Mount lead.
Fairleigh
Dickinson scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-3
advantage. In the fourth,
Vincent lofted a sacrifice fly to right to even the score at
3-3. In the fifth, Kresky
singled through the right side of the infield to score Brian
Dillon.
The
Mount evened the score in the bottom of the frame. Staso singled up the middle to open
the inning and then stole second and moved to third on a throwing
error by the catcher. After
Kane walked, Eyler singled home Staso to even the score. Winter reached base on a
fielder's choice to load the bases with one out and the Mount had a
chance to add to the lead on a fly ball to right field from
Kavanagh. The Knights,
however, threw out Eyler at third base before the run scored,
keeping the game tied at 4-4.
FDU
had a chance to take the lead in the seventh when Dillon singled up
the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Kresky hit a sharp
grounder up the middle, but Darr snared the ball with a diving stop
and threw out Kresky at first to keep the score tied, setting up
the Mount's three-run rally in the eight.
Starter
Kent Worthington
(Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) allowed four runs and
nine hits in six innings in a no-decision. He struck out five in the game. Moore pitched 2.2 innings of
scoreless relief to pick up the victory.
Winter
went 2-for-4 in the win with Flynn posting two runs scored and an
RBI.
Nicholas
Melchiorre allowed six runs (four earned) in 7.1 innings to take
the loss. Dillon went
3-for-5 with a run scored in the loss while Matt Holsman and Kresky
added two hits each.
The
