Athletic Conference leader Siena rallied to down Mount St. Mary's,
9-6, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) tied a career high with 21 saves in the loss.
The Mount
(3-8, 3-3 MAAC) had an outstanding first half, taking a 4-2 lead at
the intermission. Freshman
Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) opened the scoring just over
five minutes into the game with an assist going to freshman Eric Ososki (Harrisburg,
Pa./Central Dauphin). Siena's Bryan Neufeld answered 37
seconds later, but the Mount's Christian Kellett (Audubon,
Pa./Malvern Prep) scored with 21 seconds left in the first
quarter to give the Mount a 2-1 advantage.
Siena's Kenny
Mazzone tied the game early in the second quarter, but the Mount
scored the next two goals for a 4-2 halftime lead. Freshman Anthony Golden (Timonium, Md./Loyola
Blakefield) converted a Kellett pass with 7:48 left in the
half to give the Mount the lead. Lehrer made it a two-goal advantage
with nine seconds left in the half with the assist going to
freshman Ryan Shewell
(Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield).
DiBartolo made
13 saves in the opening half as the Mount led by two despite being
outshot by the Saints 22-to-12.
Siena's Charly
Rogener's goal five minutes into the third quarter cut the Mount's
lead to one, but Kellett answered with an extra-man goal for the
Mount for a 5-3 lead with 8:53 left in the third.
The Saints
(8-5, 6-0 MAAC), however, rattled off the next six goals of the
game to earn the victory.
Jordan Loftus and Shaun Dunn scored two minutes apart in the third
to send the game tied at 5-5 into the final quarter.
Siena broke
the game open with four more goals for a 9-5 lead. Brendan Murphy's extra-man goal 1:41
into the final quarter put the Saints up for good. Chris Zarins and Neufeld scored less
than a minute apart and Dunn's goal with 7:32 left in the game gave
Siena the four-goal margin.
The Mount's
Jim O'Shea (Rockville
Center, N.Y./Chaminade) closed out the scoring with 4:15
left in the contest.
Kellett
tallied two goals and an assist in the loss while Lehrer finished
with two goals. Defender
Russell Moncure
(Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) picked up a team-high four
ground balls. DiBartolo
allowed nine goals with his 21 saves in the game.
Loftus had a
three-point game (1g, 2a) to pace Siena while Neufeld and Dunn
added two goals each. Brent
Herbst made seven saves to earn the win in goal. Siena clinched a spot in the MAAC
Tournament with the victory.
The Mount
returns to action on Wednesday, April 22, with a 4:00 p.m. game at
VMI.
