Monmouth Takes Two From Softball

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Monmouth swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Friday. The Hawks won a pitcher's duel in the opener 2-0 and then rallied to take the nightcap, 12-8.

Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) paced the Mount (8-25, 3-6 NEC) with three hits, including a three-run homer in the nightcap. Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) and Allie Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) each added two hits and an RBI while Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) smacked a two-run homer in the second game.

Emily deLong fueled Monmouth (19-9-1, 7-3 NEC) with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored while Lee Simonetti had three hits and four runs scored in the two games. Alexa Ferrara went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The opener was a good old fashion pitcher's duel between Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) and Melissa Mehrer. The only mistake Fowler made was a two-run homer to left field by deLong in the third inning and that was the difference in the game.

Fowler allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts while Mehrer allowed three hits with two strikeouts in the complete-game shutout. The Mountaineers only got a runner to second base twice in the contest. Burk reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs, but was left stranded. In the sixth, Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) doubled down the right field line before Mehrer got out of the jam with a fly ball in foul ground to left.

In the second game, Mehrer could not get out of the first inning after Mount St. Mary's scored five runs in the opening inning. Despite trailing 8-2, the Hawks scored the final 10 runs of game to come away with a 12-8 win.

Trailing, 8-2, Monmouth cut the lead to 8-5 after scoring three runs in the third. Jackson doubled to left and came around to score on a throwing error before deLong smacked a two-run homer to right center for her 12th roundtripper of the year.

Monmouth added another run in the fifth on Ferrara's homer to left center to trim the margin to 8-6. The Hawks then took the lead in the sixth by scoring four runs to grab a 10-8 lead. deLong started the rally with an RBI single to right center before Ferrara reached on a fielding error to bring home two runs to hand Monmouth a 9-8 advantage. Jessica Nicola added an RBI single to left to cap the four-run stanza.

Ferrara then added two insurance runs on a two-run single up the middle for a 12-8 margin.

The Mount jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) singled to shortstop and Curreri walked before Burk nailed her first homer of the year to left field. After Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) doubled and touched home courtesy of an error, Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) brought home Ashley Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) on an RBI single to shortstop for a five-run lead.

Monmouth answered with two runs in the second on an error and an RBI ground out by Abby Martin to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Mount St. Mary's struck back with three in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-2 advantage. Curreri reached on an error and then came around to score on Zingle's second dinger of the year. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) doubled down the left field line and Lodato singled up the middle before Vadas hit a short pop up that fell short of the oncoming driving third baseman for the junior's first hit of the year and to plate Reeder. Fusco then loaded the bases with a single, but Kristine Sawlsville got out of the inning with a comebacker.

The Hawks then scored the final 10 runs and Sawlsville retired 15 of the final 17 batters she faced to pick up the victory. Burk doubled with one out in the fourth and Vadas singled to left field in the seventh with two outs, but both runners would be stranded on base.

Burk now has 14 career home runs, four shy of Danyale Goode's (18, 2003-06) program record.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday at home against St. Joseph's. Game time is 3 p.m.
