HONOLULU,
Hawaii The Mount St. Mary's softball team lost a pair of
games at the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Tournament on Friday. The Mount
dropped a 3-1 decision against Radford and then lost 5-1 to Santa
Clara.
Liz
Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) paced the Mount (1-7) with a
hit and an RBI. Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Beth
Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Lisa Curreri (Clinton,
N.J./North Hunterdon) each had a hit on the afternoon.
In the
contest against Radford, Leigh Godfrey paced the Highlanders (5-2)
with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. In the game against
Santa Clara, Megan Smith paced the Broncos (2-11) with two runs
scored, a hit and an RBI while Emily Batt had three hits, a run
scored and an RBI.
In the
first game of the day, Radford broke a 1-all standstill with a run
in the fourth and a run in the sixth to come away with a 3-1 win in
the first-ever meeting between the two teams in program
history.
The
Highlanders took the lead for good in the fourth. Michele Beall
singled and then scored on an error. Godfrey tripled to center and
touched home on an error on the play in the seventh to increase the
advantage to two runs.
Radford
jumped on the scoreboard in the first when Godfrey homered to lead
off the game.
Mount St.
Mary's answered in the third with a run to tie the game at 1.
Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) walked and then
touched home on Christiansen's single up the middle with two outs,
but the Highlanders scored the final two runs of the game to earn
the victory.
The
Mountaineers had a threat in the sixth, putting two runners on with
one out. Christiansen walked and Courtney Zingle (Ambler,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was hit by the pitch, but a fly out and a
strikeout ended the threat.
In the
nightcap, Santa Clara broke a scoreless standstill in the fifth
with four runs and went on for a 5-1 win in the first-ever tilt
against Mount St. Mary's.
Batt
started the scoring for the Broncos with a solo home run to lead
off the fifth. Brianna Knight doubled home a run before Smith
singled up the middle to plate Knight. Jeanine Ruffoni capped the
four-run rally with an RBI groundout to second.
The Mount
cut into the deficit with a run in the sixth. Taylor Beebe
(Olympia, Wash./Capital), the current Northeast Conference Rookie
of the Week, walked and came around to score when Gina DeAnnuntis
(Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) reached on an error.
Santa
Clara added a run thanks to a Mountaineer error in the seventh to
increase its advantage to 5-1.
Mount St.
Mary's concludes its time in Hawaii against Mississippi State on
Saturday at 5 p.m. and against Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. in the
Pepsi Malhini Aloha Tournament.
