Emmitsburg, Md. (March 29, 2009)--Mount St. Mary's
fell to Robert Morris, 7-1, in Northeast Conference action at the
MSM Softball field on Sunday afternoon. The second game of the
doubleheader was washed out by rain. A make-up date is to be
determined.
The Mount (4-21, 1-2 NEC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
third inning. Chloe
Mizianty reached on an error by the shortstop to open the
inning. Katie
Donovan followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and
second. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Amanda
Burk drove a single up the middle to plate Donovan with the
first run of the game. The Mount had a chance to add to the lead,
but Courtney
Zingle's line drive to short was snagged by Robert Morris
shortstop Jaci Timko to end the inning.
The Colonials (13-12, 2-1 NEC) took the lead with a pair of runs in
the top of the fourth. Susan Petrich double home Allie Patton with
the tying run while Kristin McDaniel blooped a single to center
field to score Petrich and give RMU a 2-1 advantage.
Robert Morris added a pair of runs in the fifth. With runners on
first and third with two outs, the Colonials pulled off a double
steal. Allie Patton got into a rundown between first and second,
allowing Timko to steal home. Patton was then safe on the play on
a Mount error. Brooke Panepinto followed with an RBI single to
give the Colonials a 4-1 lead.
Robert Morris added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh
to earn the win.
Burk finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI while Zingle added two
hits in the loss. Mount pitcher Jamie
Fowler allowed seven runs (five earned) with four strikeouts in
the game.
Perich went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Robert
Morris while Sarah Kapp and Panepinto added two hits each in the
win. Alexa Bryson allowed an unearned run while scattering eight
hits allowed to earn the win.
The Mount returns to action with a doubleheader at George
Washington on Tuesday, March 31, at 3 pm.
