FAIRFAX,
Va. George Mason swept a non-conference softball
doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday. The Patriots
took the opener 10-2 and then won the nightcap, 2-1.
Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) paced the Mount (2-16) with
three hits while Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) added two
hits, an RBI and a run scored on the afternoon.
Tori
Dudley fueled George Mason (13-11) with three hits, four runs
scored and five RBIs while Morgan Davis notched a 3-for-3
performance with three RBIs and a run scored in the
opener.
In the
nightcap, the Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the sixth
inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and go on for the 2-1 win.
Trailing
1-0 in the sixth, Rachael Davies walked with one out before Dudley
smashed a two-run homer to left field to give George Mason the
one-run advantage.
Mount St.
Mary's got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a run to grab a 1-0
edge. Katie Donovan (Seabrook, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) reached on
a fielder's choice and touched home on Beebe's RBI double to right
field with two outs.
The Mount
loaded the bases in the first inning, but could not push a run
across. Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Lisa Curreri
(Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Zingle recorded consecutive
singles to load the bases with one out, but a pair of strikeouts
ended the threat.
After the
Patriots took a 2-1 advantage, Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North
Penn) reached on an error and pinch runner Kristin Fusco (Laurel,
Md./St. Vincent Palotti) moved to second on a groundout, but a
strikeout ended the contest.
Becky
Anderson allowed one run on five hits with nine strikeouts for the
win while Jamie Fowler (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) allowed
two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts in the loss.
George
Mason scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back to
earn a 10-2 victory in the opener.
Down 1-0,
Dudley gave the Patriots the lead it would not relinquish on a
three-run homer to left center before India Adams capped a five-run
outburst with a two-run double to center for a 5-1
advantage.
Mount St.
Mary's trimmed the margin to 5-2 in the second. Christiansen
started the inning by being hit by the pitch, moved to second on a
wild pitch and touched home on Donovan's RBI single to left
field.
The
Patriots got the run back in the bottom of the stanza on a Davis
run-scoring double down the left field line for a 6-2 lead.
George Mason then crossed four runs across the plate in the third.
Alison Bryan and Miranda Cranford each knocked in a run before
Davis singled to right field to plate two runs for a 10-2
advantage.
The
Mountaineers grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the first inning when Beebe
doubled to start the contest and then came around to score on
Curreri's double. The Patriots then scored five runs in the bottom
of the stanza and never looked back for the win.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Morgan State. Game time is
1 p.m.
