late 15-to-3 run propelled James Madison past Mount St. Mary's,
69-58, in the First Round of the inaugural CollegeInsider.com
Postseason Tournament. With
the loss, the Mount finishes the season with a 19-14 record.
Kelly
Beidler's tip-in early in the second half lifted the Mount to a
37-34 advantage, but the Dukes answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a
Kyle Swanston three-pointer, to take a 43-37 advantage.
The
Mount responded with a 9-3 run of its own to even the score at
46-46. The Mountaineers
started the streak with a Kelly Beidler putback that ended a
possession that saw five Mount St. Mary's offensive rebounds. Shawn Atupem hit a jumper,
Jeremy Goode a lay-up and Will Holland capped the run with a
three-point basket to even the score with 11:00 remaining in the
game.
The
game of streaks saw the Dukes (20-14) score the next eight points,
the final six on Pierre Curtis lay-ups. Holland and Pierre Brown nailed
back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 54-52 with 6:06 on
the clock, but the Dukes sealed the win by scoring 15 of the next
18 points. Julian Wells
scored eight points during the run, including a three-point play to
make the score 59-53 and a three-pointer with 50 seconds left for a
69-55 lead.
Goode
led the Mount with 11 points while Sam Atupem and Holland added 10
points each in the loss.
Atupem added eight boards, three assists and three blocks in the
final game of his collegiate career. Fellow senior Markus Mitchell posted
two points, two rebounds and two assists for the
Mountaineers.
Devon
Moore paced James Madison with 21 points and five boards while
Wells and Curtis each scored 17 points in the win.
"We
helped them with turnovers," said Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan
Brown. "We got a little
apprehensive when they got a few deflections. We were okay when we defended them in
the halfcourt, but they made us pay on the breakaways."
The
Dukes shot 55.2 percent in the second half to finish at 45.8
percent in the game. The
Mount was held to 34.5 percent shooting in the second half to
finish at 39.0 percent from the floor.
The
Mount jumped to a 10-5 lead early in the game behind strong play
from the post players. Four
different forwards scored for the Mount during the run for the
early five-point advantage.
Pierre Brown's three-pointer stretched the lead to 17-9 with 13:45
left in the half, but James Madison got back into the game by
scoring the next 12 points.
Curtis
started the run with a three-pointer and Wells drained a three to
cap the spurt to give the Dukes a 21-17 advantage. The Mount scored the next four points,
including a Goode steal and lay-up to even the score. The game was back-and-forth for the
rest of the half with the Mount grabbing the 31-30 lead on a Sam
Atupem lay-up.
Sam
Atupem paced the Mount with eight points and four boards in the
opening half while Shawn Atupem and Goode chipped in six points
each. Moore led James
Madison with 13 points in the opening half.
The
Mount shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half while
holding James Madison to 36.7 percent.
Game
Notes...This
is the Mount's second-straight postseason appearance and the fifth
since the move to NCAA Division I in 1988-89...The Mount earned
NCAA bids in 1995, 1999 and 2008 and a spot in the NIT in
1996...The Mount's 19 wins tied for the second-most by a MSM team
since the school moved to NCAA Division I...Goode dished out two
assists and is now tied for second all-time in school history with
471 career helpers.
