COLLEGE
PARK, Md. Maryland defeated Mount St. Mary's 5-1 in the
final game of the Maryland Softball College Park Invitational on
Sunday.
Ashley
Lodato (Brick, N.J./Ranney) paced the Mount (2-12) with a hit and a
run scored while Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) notched
a double in the loss.
Michelle
Takeda powered the Terrapins (13-11) with a 3-for-3 performance,
two RBIs and a run scored and Niki Lau added two hits and two RBIs
in the winning effort.
Maryland
erased a 1-0 deficit and scored the final five runs to go on for
its eighth win against the Mountaineers.
Trailing
1-0 in the second, the Terrapins tied the game at one on a Takeda
run-scoring double to right center.
Takeda
then gave Maryland the lead for good on a homer to left field in
the fourth. Jennifer Anderson scored on an error and then Lau
capped a three-run rally with an RBI double to right field for a
4-1 advantage.
Lau added
a run in the sixth to seal the victory with a run-scoring double to
left center for a 5-1 lead.
Mount St.
Mary's got the scoring started on the afternoon with a run in the
second to grab a 1-0 margin. Lodato singled up the middle and
scored when Kristin Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) reached
on an error. With runners at the corners, the Terrapins ended the
threat with a strikeout.
The Mount
also put runners on base in the first, fourth and fifth. In the
first, Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) walked to open the
game and moved to second on Amanda Burk's (Bristow, Va./Stonewall
Jackson) groundout before Maryland got out of the jam with a ground
out to third base.
Christiansen
doubled to left center with one out in the fourth. The freshman
moved to third on Lodato's fly out to right, but was left stranded
on third. Fusco then started the fifth with a walk, but a
strikeout, fielder's choice and strikeout ended the
threat.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at UMBC. Game time is 2
p.m.
