Seton Hall Takes Slugfest Against Softball, 16-14

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Seton Hall defeated Mount St. Mary's 16-14 at the Maryland Softball College Park Invitational on Saturday. The Mount's second game against Delaware was postponed after the field was deemed unplayable because of rain.

Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) paced the Mount (2-11) with a 3-for-5 performance with five RBIs and three runs scored while Beth Everist (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added two hits, five RBIs and a grand slam for her second home run of the tournament.

Brittany Schillizzi powered the Pirates (9-9) with two hits, six RBIs and a run scored while Shannon Pease and Christina Esposito each knocked in three runs in the winning effort.

Seton Hall took the advantage in the second inning and held on in a slugfest against Mount St. Mary's to even the all-time series at two games apiece.

Schillizzi put the Pirates ahead for good on a two-run double in the second inning to take a 2-0 advantage.

The Mount cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the stanza when Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) brought home Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) on a fielder's choice.

Seton Hall added a run in the fourth courtesy of a Schillizzi sacrifice fly for a 3-1 edge before the Pirates added four runs in the fifth. Nalin Bennett started the rally with a home run before Kealan Waldron smacked a two-run roundtripper and Schillizzi capped the four-run outburst with an RBI groundout for a 7-1 lead.

Mount St. Mary's struck right back for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the deficit to 7-6. Zimmerman opened the stanza with a single to left before Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hotboro-Horsham) walked and Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital) singled through the left side to load the bases. After Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) was hit by the pitch to bring home Zimmerman, Burk cleared the bases with a three-run triple to center field. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) plated Burk on a single to left to cap the five-run inning.

Seton Hall answered right back with a seven-run output in the sixth. Esposito and Pease each smacked three-run homers and Amanda Winn added an RBI double to hand the Pirates a 14-6 lead.

The Mount did not go away after scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning. Zingle and Zimmerman started the rally with back-to-back singles before Beebe walked to load the bases. After Curreri brought home Zingle on a single to left and Burk plated Zimmerman on a base hit up the middle, Everist drilled a grand slam to cut the margin to 14-12.

Once again, Seton Hall responded in the next inning. The Pirates sealed the win with two runs in the seventh thanks to a Shillizzi two-run single to left.

Mount St. Mary's tried to come back from a 16-12 deficit, crossing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Burk, the program's all-time leader in triples, added her second triple of the night to score Zingle and then Everist singled up the middle to bring in Burk with two outs to cut the margin to 16-14. Seton Hall ended the marathon with a strikeout.

Everist hit the Mountaineers' first grand slam since Zimmerman had one against Coppin State on Mar. 27, 2008.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday in the final day of the Maryland College Park Invitational against host Maryland. Game time is 3 p.m.
