Softball Drops Two Games At Bank Of Hawaii Invitational

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on Saturday. The Mount lost 11-3 to Western Carolina and then fell 11-1 in an exhibition game against the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education.

Amanda Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) paced the Mount (0-2) with three hits on the afternoon and a run scored. Burk, who came into the season as the all-time leader in four categories, took over the top spot in hits with 150. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) each recorded a hit and an RBI against the Catamounts.

Amber Hawkins fueled Western Carolina (4-6) with two hits, two runs scored and four RBIs while Kristen Gay posted a hit, a run scored and two RBIs in the winning effort.

With the game tied at 3 against Catamounts, Western Carolina scored the final eight runs to come away with the 11-3 victory. Reese started a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to left center before Hawkins plated two runs on a single to left center. Beatty added a run-scoring single and Hawkins scored on a wild pitch. The Catamounts added two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.

Western Carolina jumped on the board first with three runs in the third. Mollie Fowler singled to third and then came around to score on a single by Keri Burnside. Hawkins capped the stanza with a two-run homer to left.

The Mountaineers answered right back in the top of the fourth inning with three runs to tie the contest. Lisa Curreri (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) walked, Burk singled through the left side and Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) walked to load the bases. Curreri touched home on a fielder's choice before Reeder plated Burk on an RBI single to right center and Allie Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) touched home on a Zimmerman infield single to square the game at 3.

In the exhibition game against Tokyo, the College of Physical Education posted four runs in the first inning, five in the second and two in the fourth to earn the 11-1 win in five innings. The Mountaineers lone ruin came in the second inning when Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) smacked a solo home run. Burk and Gina DeAnnuntis (Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) also recorded hits against Tokyo.

Any game against Tokyo is considered an exhibition game and the statistics do not count since the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education is not a sanctioned NCAA team.
