HONOLULU,
Hawaii Mount St. Mary's lost a pair of games at the Bank of
Hawaii Invitational on Saturday. The Mount lost 11-3 to Western
Carolina and then fell 11-1 in an exhibition game against the Tokyo
Women's College of Physical Education.
Amanda
Burk (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) paced the Mount (0-2) with
three hits on the afternoon and a run scored. Burk, who came into
the season as the all-time leader in four categories, took over the
top spot in hits with 150. Nicole Reeder (Glen Burnie,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Jenna Zimmerman (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) each recorded a hit and an RBI against the
Catamounts.
Amber
Hawkins fueled Western Carolina (4-6) with two hits, two runs
scored and four RBIs while Kristen Gay posted a hit, a run scored
and two RBIs in the winning effort.
With the
game tied at 3 against Catamounts, Western Carolina scored the
final eight runs to come away with the 11-3 victory. Reese started
a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to
left center before Hawkins plated two runs on a single to left
center. Beatty added a run-scoring single and Hawkins scored on a
wild pitch. The Catamounts added two runs in the fifth and a run in
the sixth.
Western
Carolina jumped on the board first with three runs in the third.
Mollie Fowler singled to third and then came around to score on a
single by Keri Burnside. Hawkins capped the stanza with a two-run
homer to left.
The
Mountaineers answered right back in the top of the fourth inning
with three runs to tie the contest. Lisa Curreri (Clinton,
N.J./North Hunterdon) walked, Burk singled through the left side
and Courtney Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) walked to load
the bases. Curreri touched home on a fielder's choice before Reeder
plated Burk on an RBI single to right center and Allie Vadas
(Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) touched home on a Zimmerman
infield single to square the game at 3.
In the
exhibition game against Tokyo, the College of Physical Education
posted four runs in the first inning, five in the second and two in
the fourth to earn the 11-1 win in five innings. The Mountaineers
lone ruin came in the second inning when Liz Christiansen (Etters,
Pa./Red Land) smacked a solo home run. Burk and Gina DeAnnuntis
(Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) also recorded hits against
Tokyo.
Any game
against Tokyo is considered an exhibition game and the statistics
do not count since the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education
is not a sanctioned NCAA team.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Saturday at the Bank of Hawaii
Invitational against Hawaii in the first game of the Bracket play.
Game time is 4 p.m. The loser plays in the consolation game at 8
p.m. and the winner moves on to the championship game at 10
p.m.
