N.J. (February 7, 2009)Kelly Beidler (Virginia Beach,
Va./Tallwood) scored
a career-high 22 points and added seven rebounds to lead Mount St.
Mary's past Fairleigh Dickinson, 75-68, in Northeast Conference
action on Saturday night.
The Mount has won nine of its past 10 games to move to 14-10
overall and 9-4 in the Northeast Conference.
Beidler
scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half as the Mount held on
for the victory. Leading
32-25 at the half, the Mount saw Fairleigh Dickinson score the
first four points of the second half to cut the lead to three. Mount St. Mary's answered with a
15-to-5 run to grab a 47-34 advantage after a Jeremy Goode (Charlotte,
N.C./Providence Day) three-pointer.
FDU
was able to stay in the game behind Sean Baptiste's 27 points. Baptiste scored 16 points in the
second half, including a three-pointer that cut the Mount advantage
to 57-48 with 6:05 left.
Beidler answered with a three-pointer of his own to regain a
double-digit lead for the Mount.
The
closest FDU (6-18, 5-8 NEC) got the rest of the way was the final
score of 75-68.
Beidler
hit 9-of-14 shots from the field for his career-best 22 points for
the Mount. Goode added 18
points, five assists and five rebounds while Jean Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul
VI) added 14 points in the win. Tayvon Jackson (Indian Head,
Md./Lackey) chipped in a career-high seven points and four
rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench for the Mount.
Baptiste
was 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range for
his 27-point night while Cameron Tyler added 10 points and 11
assists for a double-double.
"I
am happy about getting the road win tonight," said Mount St. Mary's
head coach Milan Brown. "It
showed mental toughness to get the win after a tough loss the other
night. Tayvon Jackson gave
us a big lift off the bench with his energy tonight while Kelly
Beidler and Jeremy Goode made key plays throughout the
game."
The
Mount opened the game with an 11-0 run over the first five minutes
of the contest. Goode
capped the streak with a three-pointer while Beidler added
back-to-back baskets in the run. The Knights were able to cut the Mount
advantage to 21-13, but a 9-3 spurt gave the Mount its biggest lead
of the half, 30-16.
Tayvon
Jackson tallied a traditional three-point play and a putback basket
during the streak to give the Mount a 14-point lead. The Knights, however, scored the next
nine points to cut the deficit to five before Markus Mitchell's
rebound basket made the score 32-25 at the half.
Mount
St. Mary's scored 15 points off 12 Fairleigh Dickinson turnovers in
the first half, but the Knight's hit 4-of-6 from three-point range
to stay in the game.
Mount
St. Mary's returns home to face St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m. on
Thursday, Feb. 12, at Knott Arena on campus.
