HONOLULU,
Hawaii Despite a strong effort on the mound by Jamie Fowler
(Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown), Hawaii defeated Mount St.
Mary's in its season opener 2-0 at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational
on Friday.
Fowler
tossed five scoreless innings before the Rainbow Warriors (4-11)
scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come away with
the victory. The senior gave up two runs on four hits with three
strikeouts in six innings for the Mountaineers (0-1) while Courtney
Zingle (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) picked up the squad's only hit
on the evening.
Courtney
Baughman earned the win after allowing one hit with seven
strikeouts in the complete-game effort for Hawaii. Tanisha Milca
had two hits and scored the decisive run while Clare Warwick and
Audrey Andrade each had a hit and an RBI in the winning
effort.
The
Rainbow Warriors broke a scoreless standstill with two runs in the
sixth and held on for its second-straight win against the
Mountaineers.
Milca
started the rally in the sixth with a single to right field and
moved up to second on a Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz sacrifice bunt. Warwick
brought home Milca with the game's first run on an RBI double to
left center before Warwick scored on a single to right field by
Andrade.
Mount St.
Mary's only threat of the game came in the second inning. Zingle
notched the squad's first hit of the season to left center and
moved to second on an Allie Vadas (Spring Lake Heights,
N.J./Manasquan) groundout. Baughman got out of the jam with a pair
of strikeouts.
The Mount
is making its second trip to the Aloha State in program history and
first since the 2005 season.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Saturday with an exhibition game
against the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education and a
contest against Western Carolina in the second day of the Bank of
Hawaii Invitational.
