Emmitsburg,
Md. (February 21, 2009)--Jeremy
Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) had 21 points, seven
assists, five rebounds and three steals to pace Mount St. Mary's in
a 93-63 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) at Knott Arena on Saturday
night. The win was the Mount's eighth-straight at
home.
The Mount was
16-for-21 (76.2 percent) from the field over the first 13 minutes
of the game to take a 44-27 advantage. Goode scored 14 of his
game-high 21 points during the streak while Jean
Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) added 13 of his 19 points in the
stretch. Mount St. Mary's (17-11, 12-5 NEC) went to the locker
room with a 49-34 advantage, hitting 60.9 percent from the
field.
Kelly
Beidler (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) opened the second half
with an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Cajou and the Mount
continued to roll. Sam
Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) scored a bucket in the lane
to give the Mount its biggest lead, 91-57, with 2:15
remaining.
Goode finished
7-for-11 from the field for his 21 points while Cajou hit 6-of-10,
including 5-of-9 from three-point range, for his 19 markers.
Beidler hit 8-of-10 from the field for 18 points while grabbing
five boards.
"We did a
really good job of sharing the basketball," said Mount St. Mary's
head coach Milan
Brown. "We turned away half-open looks for wide open
shots."
The Mount's
seniors, Atupem and Markus
Mitchell (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) played their final regular
season home game at Knott Arena. Mitchell played his 123rd career
game, breaking the all-time mark of 122 held by Mark Scallion
(1983-87) and Mike Grimes (1984-88). Atupem had six points and four
blocks while Mitchell added six points and five rebounds in the
game.
"Those two
guys are absolutely two of our corner stones of the foundation of
what we are trying to do here," said Brown. "They've been so solid
and have been really good for us both on and off the court. If
someone was to ask about what our program is about, I would point
to those two and say look at them."
Devin Sweetney
tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort for the Red
Flash.
The Mount shot
a sizzling 63.2 percent (36-of-57) from the field in the game, the
best field goal percentage in a game by a Mount team since the
school moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89. Saint Francis (5-22,
2-14) shot 34.5 percent in the contest.
The Mount
closes out the NEC regular season at Robert Morris on Saturday,
February 28, at 4:00 p.m.
Game
Notes...The Mount has
now won eight straight in the all-time series with Saint Francis
(Pa.) to take a 33-27 advantage...The previous best FG percentage
in a game was 63.0 percent against Robert Morris in 2007 and
Fairleigh Dickinson in 1995.
