Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) scored 21 points to lead
Mount St. Mary's to a 72-62 win at Monmouth in Northeast Conference
action on Saturday night.
Mount
St. Mary's (16-10, 11-4) used a 20-4 run that closed the first half
and began the second half to take control of the game. Trailing 24-21 with 8:19 left in the
first half, the Mount closed the half on a 13-to-4 run to take a
34-28 lead at the half.
The
Mountaineers then scored the first seven points of the second half
for a 41-28 advantage. Jean
Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) hit a jumper, Goode added a
traditional three-point play and Sam Atupem (Newport News,
Va./Woodside) a rebound lay-up in the run.
The
Hawks (6-21, 4-10 NEC) cut the lead to 55-47 with 6:01 left in the
game after a pair of free throws by Mike Myers-Keitt, but the Mount
used a 9-2 spurt to push the margin to 15. Will Holland (Houston, Texas/Lamar)
capped the streak with a three-pointer.
"We knew they would make a run,"
said Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan Brown. "It was just a matter of how we would
respond. Any time you can
get a win on the road, it is a good thing."
The
Mount has won three straight games and is 11-1 over its past 12
games to maintain second place in the Northeast
Conference.
Goode
finished with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal
and one block to pace the Mount in the victory. He hit 7-of-10 from the field in the
game. Kelly Beidler
(Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds
for his sixth double-double of the season for the Mount while Cajou
added 13 points and five boards.
Travis
Taylor paced Monmouth with 23 points and five boards while Will
Campbell chipped in 15 points.
In
the first half, the Mount jumped to a 5-0 lead on a Beidler jumper
and a Goode traditional three-point play. The Hawks, however, responded by
scoring 14 of the next 16 points to grab a 14-7 advantage.
Turnovers keyed the Monmouth run as the Hawks scored 10 points off
of five Mount giveaways during the streak.
Goode
hit back-to-back three-pointers on the Mount's next two possessions
and Cajou's bucket with 11:02 left in the half gave the Mount a
17-16 lead. Cajou scored
seven points during a 13-to-4 run by the Mount to close out the
first half for a 34-28 lead at the break.
The
Mount shot 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from the field and held a
25-to-10 advantage on the boards in the first half, but 12
turnovers kept the Hawks in the game. Monmouth converted 11-of-31 (35.5
percent) from the field in the opening half.
Goode
paced the Mount with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the first half
while Cajou added nine points. Campbell tallied nine points in the
opening 20 minutes for the Hawks.
Mount
St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 19, with a 7:00
p.m. game at Wagner.

Mount is now 21-19 all-time on Valentine's Day...The Mount has won
the past four against Monmouth and is 28-21 all-time against the
Hawks.
