Emmitsburg, Md. (November 21, 2009)--Senior point
guard Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence
Day) tallied 23 points, seven rebounds and five steals to
lead Mount St. Mary's to a 63-44 victory over visiting Loyola on
Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena. It was the 165th meeting
all-time between the schools.
Leading 24-21 at the half, the Mount used a 24-to-5 run over the
first 10 minutes of the second half to take control of the game.
Goode scored eight of his game-high 23 points in the run, including
a pair of traditional three-point plays.
The Mountaineers (2-1) held Loyola to 27.1 percent shooting
(13-of-48) from the field in the game, including just 7-of-29
(.241) in the second half. The 44 points scored by Loyola were
fewest against the Mount since Feb. 4, 1978, a 51-41 Mount
victory.
Mount St. Mary's jumped to a 13-8 in the opening minutes and
survived a stretch of 11:26 in the first half without scoring a
field goal to lead 24-21 at the break. Goode scored 12 points in
the opening half that saw the teams combine to shoot 13-of-42
(31.0) from the field.
Jean Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) had 16 points and seven rebounds
in the win while Pierre Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) added a
season-high seven points off the bench. Sophomore Danny Thompson
(Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) added career highs of four points
and five rebounds for the Mount off the bench as well.
Loyola's Brett Harvey had a team-high 12 points.
The win gives the
Mount a 96-69 lead in the all-time series with Loyola, the most
played rivalry in the state of Maryland. The Mount is now 57-14
all-time at home against the Greyhounds.
Mount St. Mary's
returns to action on Wednesday, November 25, when Niagara visits
Knott Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game.

Notes...Goode has scored 20 or more points against Loyola
in each of the past three seasons...Goode's 15 free throws made are
tied the sixth-most in a game in Mount history.
