Mount Falls to Robert Morris, 77-70

Emmitsburg, Md. (January 5, 2009)--Robert Morris used an early 17-2 run in the second half to secure a 77-70 win over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Confernece action at Knott Arena on Monday night. Mount St. Mary's junior guard Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) became the 40th Mount player to score 1,000 career points in the loss.

Trailing 35-28 one minute into the second half, the Colonials (8-7, 3-1 NEC) rattled off the decisive 17-to-2 streak to grab a 51-39 advantage with 12:44 left in the game. Rob Robinson scored eight of his 17 points during the streak to pace Robert Morris.

The Mount fought back, cutting the deficit to 61-57 after a Jean Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) three-pointer with 4:26 on the clock. The Colonials, however, were able to withstand the rally and pull out the victory.

"I knew we would fight hard and make a comeback," said Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan Brown. "However, the deficit was just deep enough that we would have had to play a perfect 10 minutes to earn the win, and we only played a perfect seven-and-a-half minutes, which is why we were able to cut the deficit to four."

Robinson tallied 17 points, nine boards and three blocks in the victory while Jeremy Chappell added 17 points and eight boards. Cajou paced the Mount with 17 points while Goode added 11 points and a season-best nine assists. Kelly Beidler (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in the loss.

Robert Morris scored 49 second-half points to earn the win, hitting 48.5 percent from the field and 16-of-21 at the charity stripe. The Mount held the Colonials to 30.0 percent shooting in the first half and 39.7 percent from the floor in the contest. The Mount hit 43.6 percent overall, but Robert Morris used a 46-to-30 advantage on the boards to counter the shooting advantage.

Mount St. Mary's (5-9, 0-3 NEC) jumped to a 26-15 lead in the first half after a Goode fast-break lay-up. That lay-in capped a 12-2 spurt by the Mount that was started by a Cajou three-point basket. The Colonials were able to cut the deficit to 33-to-28 at the break.

The Mount hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night at Knott Arena in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Game Notes...The Mount's 0-3 start is its worst start in NEC play since an 0-4 mark in 2002-03...Including tonight's game, the Mount will play six of the next seven contests at Knott Arena...Jeremy Goode now has 1,002 career points, good for 39th all-time in school history...His 1,000th career point came on a lay-up with 10:35 left in the contest.
