Dunn Sparks Women's Basketball Past Wagner, 55-42

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) posted 16 points and 14 rebounds to power Mount St. Mary's past Wagner 55-42 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Dunn, who notched her first double-double of the season and eight of her career, shot 4 of 7 from the field and connected on 8 of 16 from the free throw line. She also added a season-high 14 rebounds and one steal.

Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) also tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds along with four steals and two blocks. Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) narrowly missed becoming the third Mount (8-12, 3-7 NEC) player with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine boards while Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.

Lindsey Corcoran paced the Seahawks (6-14, 2-8 NEC) with 14 points and Kelly Clark registered 10 points in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead it would not relinquish midway through the second half and never looked back to end a five-game losing streak.

Helen Swartley gave Wagner a 39-38 lead with 10 minutes remaining before Dunn started a 5-0 free-throw run by tying the score 14 seconds later after hitting the front end of two free throws. Dunn gave the Mountaineers the advantage for good on a pair of charity tosses with 8:24 remaining at 41-39. Westbrooks then capped the surge with two free throws at 6:01.

Andrea Reed then made one free throw at 4:24 to stop the five unanswered points, but the Mount finished the game on a 12-2 to put the game away. Oliver fueled the run with four points.

Wagner controlled the advantage for most of the first including taking its largest lead of the night at 7-2 with 16:53 left in the half. Corcoran had five points to start the game for the Seahawks. Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 12 and the two teams would be knotted three more times in the stanza. With Wagner holding a 23-20 lead, Gauthier nailed a 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining and then handed the Mount the lead going into the locker room, drilling her second-straight trey with seven seconds left in the frame for a 26-23 lead.

In the second half, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 36-32 advantage with 12:21 remaining only to see the Seahawks rally to take a 39-38 edge. Wagner went on a 7-2 run on a 3-pointer by Casey Stokes and jumpers by Reed and Helen Swartley. Dunn then scored the next four points and Mount St. Mary's went on for the win and end a two-game losing streak against the Seahawks.

The Mount had two players with double-doubles for the first time since LaToya Butler (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Dita Krumberga (16 points, 10 rebounds) both double dipped against Navy on Nov. 25, 2006. The squad also had four players in double figures for the second time this season after notching four 10-point scorers against Canisius.

Gauthier now needs 25 points to become the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000 points and moved into 10th place on the program's all-time career assists list with 305 after dishing out four helpers against the Seahawks.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday at Quinnipiac. Game time is 7 p.m.
