Jeremy Goode Scores 19 Points in the Mount's 60-42 Win over Quinnipiac

Hamden, Conn. (January 29, 2009)—Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) scored 19 points and had five steals to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 60-42 win at Quinnipiac on Thursday night. The win was the seventh-straight for the Mountaineers, marking the second-longest win streak by a Mount team since the school moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.

The Mount, which leads the Northeast Conference in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, held the Bobcats to 34.7 percent shooting in the game. The 42 points allowed were the fewest by a Mount team since a 57-38 victory over Wagner on Feb. 28, 2004.

"We tried to continue to do what we normally do, which is defend," said Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan Brown. "We used our speed and quickness to our advantage tonight. Every time we play, we try to be the best defensive team we can be, especially on the road."

Leading 34-28 early in the second half, the Mount scored seven straight points to take a 41-28 advantage. Goode scored the final five points of the run on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. A Jean Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) three-point play with 1:11 left gave the Mount its biggest lead of the contest, 60-40.

Goode was the only Mount player in double figure with his game-high 19 points. Kelly Beidler (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) added nine points and seven rebounds while Will Holland (Houston, Texas/Lamar) tallied all nine of his points in the first half. Cajou saw his 13-game double-figure scoring streak snapped after scoring eight points in the game. Shawn Atupem (Newport News, Va/Woodside) added seven points and seven rebounds in the win.

Justin Rutty tallied 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Quinnipiac (8-12, 4-6 NEC) while James Feldeine added 11 points in the loss.

The Bobcats started the game strong, grabbing a 10-2 lead after a Bryan Geffen three-pointer at the 14:42 mark of the first half. Quinnipiac hit 4-of-5 from the field to start the game while the Mount hit 1-for-10 (.100) to start the game.

The Mount got back into the game behind the strong play of Holland, who scored nine points, including a three-pointer to cap a 13-to-4 run that gave the Mount a 15-14 advantage with just under 10 minutes left in the half.

Mount St. Mary's closed the half on a 10-to-3 run to grab a 29-to-23 advantage at the break. Kelly Beidler scored five points and Goode three during the run. The Mount hit just 37.9 percent from the floor in the first half and was outrebounded 19-to-14, but was able to score 16 points off 11 Bobcats turnovers. Quinnipiac shot 45.5 percent in the first half, but made just 5-of-15 (.333) from the field after hitting 5-of-7 to start the game.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Wagner at Knott Arena. The Mount will be celebrating the school's Winter Homecoming and the team will be wearing throwback uniforms from the Mount's 1962 NCAA College Division National Championship team.
