EMMITSBURG,
Md. Central Connecticut State defeated Mount St. Mary's
60-47 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on
Monday.
Brianna
Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) paced the Mount (7-11, 2-7
NEC) with 15 points and seven rebounds while Leah Westbrooks
(Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) chipped in 10 points
in the loss.
Kerrianne
Dugan and P.J. Wade fueled the Blue Devils with 14 points apiece.
Leanne Crocket added 13 points and eight rebounds and Shontice
Simmons registered nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and
three steals in the winning effort.
Central
Connecticut State took the advantage early in the first half and
never looked back to sweep the season series for the first time
ever against the Mountaineers and notched its first win in
Emmitsburg since the 1997-98 season.
With the
score tied at 3, the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run to take the lead
it would not relinquish. Gauthier knotted the contest at 3 at the
18:54 mark, but Simmons then scored the next five points and Wade
scored in the paint for a 10-3 advantage 3:59 into the
tilt.
The Mount
then cut the margin to a basket after Hassanah Oliver (Hillside,
N.J./Hillside) hit a jumper and Gauthier nailed her second three of
the night at 14:58 to trim the margin to 10-8.
Central
Connecticut State went on a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to
grab a 30-12 advantage with 6:56 left in the first half. Dugan
fueled the run with eight points and Crockett added seven points in
that stretch. The Blue
Devils increased the margin to 19 points with 3:11 left in the
first half, but the Mountaineers closed the half on a 5-1 run to go
into the locker room trailing 34-19.
Central
Connecticut State stretched its lead to 20 points with 14:50 left
in the contest. Mount St. Mary's began to claw away at the deficit
and went on a 7-0 run to erase a 16-point margin and cut it to
single digits. After Wade handed the Blue Devils a 55-39 advantage
by converting two free throws at 4:13, the Mount scored the next
seven points. Westbrooks keyed the surge with five points while
Oliver added two from the charity stripe in that span. Dugan then
nailed a 3-pointer at 1:16 and the Mount could get no closer the
rest of the way.
With her
15 points, Gauthier is now 44 points from 1,000 for her career. In
addition, the senior dished out two assists and now needs six
helpers to crack the all-time Top-10 in that category.
Courtney
Nyce (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) posted a career-high
five points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Mary Dunn
(Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) registered nine points and eight
rebounds and Oliver finished the night with eight
points.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Thursday in a non-conference affair at
Longwood. Game time is 7 p.m.
