Women's Basketball Drops 60-47 Decision Against Central Connecticut State

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Central Connecticut State defeated Mount St. Mary's 60-47 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) paced the Mount (7-11, 2-7 NEC) with 15 points and seven rebounds while Leah Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland/Holy Faith Secondary School) chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Kerrianne Dugan and P.J. Wade fueled the Blue Devils with 14 points apiece. Leanne Crocket added 13 points and eight rebounds and Shontice Simmons registered nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals in the winning effort.

Central Connecticut State took the advantage early in the first half and never looked back to sweep the season series for the first time ever against the Mountaineers and notched its first win in Emmitsburg since the 1997-98 season.

With the score tied at 3, the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run to take the lead it would not relinquish. Gauthier knotted the contest at 3 at the 18:54 mark, but Simmons then scored the next five points and Wade scored in the paint for a 10-3 advantage 3:59 into the tilt.

The Mount then cut the margin to a basket after Hassanah Oliver (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) hit a jumper and Gauthier nailed her second three of the night at 14:58 to trim the margin to 10-8.

Central Connecticut State went on a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to grab a 30-12 advantage with 6:56 left in the first half. Dugan fueled the run with eight points and Crockett added seven points in that stretch. The Blue Devils increased the margin to 19 points with 3:11 left in the first half, but the Mountaineers closed the half on a 5-1 run to go into the locker room trailing 34-19.

Central Connecticut State stretched its lead to 20 points with 14:50 left in the contest. Mount St. Mary's began to claw away at the deficit and went on a 7-0 run to erase a 16-point margin and cut it to single digits. After Wade handed the Blue Devils a 55-39 advantage by converting two free throws at 4:13, the Mount scored the next seven points. Westbrooks keyed the surge with five points while Oliver added two from the charity stripe in that span. Dugan then nailed a 3-pointer at 1:16 and the Mount could get no closer the rest of the way.

With her 15 points, Gauthier is now 44 points from 1,000 for her career. In addition, the senior dished out two assists and now needs six helpers to crack the all-time Top-10 in that category.

Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) posted a career-high five points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) registered nine points and eight rebounds and Oliver finished the night with eight points.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday in a non-conference affair at Longwood. Game time is 7 p.m.
